St. Peter deals 1st defeat to Cardinals

ST. PETER – Big South Conference nemesis St. Peter handed the Fairmont Area Cardinal girls soccer team its first loss of the season on Tuesday night in St. Peter.

Senior striker Marta Springer connected for two goals, while junior goalkeeper Desi Krueger posted a shutout to power the Saints to a 3-0 league victory over the Cardinals.

Springer produced her pair of goals during the game’s opening seven minutes before midfielder Anna Amos delivered an unassisted second-half goal for St. Peter.

Krueger stopped all 13 of Fairmont Area’s shots on goal, while Cardinal netminder Alex Christianson turned away a dozen of the Saints’ shots on the game.

Fairmont Area (3-1, 1-1 Big South) travels to Worthington on Thursday night for another conference clash with the Trojans at 6:45 p.m.

St. Peter (2-3, 1-1) faces New Ulm in a 5 p.m. league game on Thursday at the Martin Luther College Fields in New Ulm.

Worthington edged Fairmont Area, 2-1, during the junior varsity clash on Thursday night in St.?Peter.

Brooke Smith tallied an unassisted goal to account for the Cardinals’ offensive output on the night.

Cassidy Krusemark and Taylor Eicholz combined to handle Fairmont Area’s goalkeeping duties.
