Gary ‘Wally’ Walters

FAIRMONT – A memorial service for Gary L. “Wally” Walters, 64, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial with full military honors by the Martin Co. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 will be Thursday afternoon at Center Chain Cemetery, rural Fairmont.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today, Sept. 3, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Gary passed away Monday morning, Sept. 1, 2014, at the Lutz Wing in Fairmont.

Gary Lee “Wally” Walters was born June 11, 1950, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Jacob and Velma (Mulso) Walters. Gary grew up in Fairmont and was a 1968 graduate of Fairmont High School. Gary was drafted in the U.S. Army on June 4, 1970, and served during Vietnam. Gary received a Purple Heart after being wounded in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on Dec. 8, 1971. In 1978, he started working for the Minnesota Work Force Center and assisted veterans with job placement, job training and schooling. Gary was united in marriage to Kristy Jo Hauglid on Nov. 1, 1994. After 35 years at the Work Force Center, Gary retired in August 2013. Gary enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and NASCAR. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin Co. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 and a founding board member of Pheasants Forever. Gary was known as a very generous person who enjoyed helping anybody that needed it.

Survivors include his wife, Kristy Jo Walters of Fairmont; two sons, Wade Walters and special friend, Danielle, of Farmington, Jesse Walters and fiance, Krysten, of Farmington; mother, Velma Walters of Fairmont; three brothers, Mark Walters and his wife, Julie, of Fairmont, Craig Walters of rural Fairmont, Todd Walters and his wife, Patty, of Minneapolis; parents-in-law, Al and Darlene Hauglid of Fairmont; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jay and Georgia Hauglid of Tempe, Ariz., Kathy and Duffy Post of Fairmont, Jeff and Tiffany Hauglid of Windom; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Walters; grandparents; aunts; and uncles.
