Raiders edge Jaguars; Tigers scratch Bucs

FULDA – Quarterback Brian Fenske rushed for two touchdowns and three 2-point conversions to guide the Fulda Raiders to a 30-20 season-opening victory over the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars during Southern Confederacy Conference football action Friday night in Fulda.

Fenske, who gained 93 yards on 16 carries, reached the end zone on a 30-yard run before converting the 2-point run for an 8-0 Fulda lead in the opening quarter.

Running back C.J. Hodge, who topped the Jaguars with 79 yards on 17 totes, countered during the second quarter, breaking loose for a 40-yard TD run. Quarterback Josh Wolter then delivered the tying 2-point conversion run.

Jordan White later scored on a 48-yard run to swing the lead back to Fulda before Justin Dierks’ 8-yard TD run and Fenske’s 2-point run extended the home team’s lead to 22-8 by halftime.

GHEC/Truman, however, rallied behind Wolters’ 8-yard scoring sprint to trim the visitors’ deficit to 22-14 during the third period.

Fenske gave Fulda some breathing room later in the third quarter, crossing the goal line from 12 yards out before delivering the 2-point run for a 30-14 margin.

Wolter, who produced 67 yards on 12 rushes, fired a 35-yard TD pass to Tristan Maday to whittle the Jaguars’ gap to 30-20.

Neither team, however, scored during the fourth quarter.

Running back Brandon Everett topped all rushers with 134 yards on 13 carries for the Raiders, while Travis Kroon added 35 yards on seven carries for the Jaguars.

Wolter completed 3 of 9 passes for 49 yards, while end Zayne Engel made two catches for 14 yards.

Fenske connected on 6 of 13 passes for 58 yards, while Bennett Appel made two receptions for 22 yards.

Wolter recorded eight tackles to top the Jaguar defense, while Kroon and Hodge chipped in six and five stops, respectively.

Everett tallied seven tackles for Fulda, while Fenske pocketed an interception.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman (0-1) plays host to Edgerton/Ellsworth at 7 p.m. Friday night in Granada.

Fulda (1-0) travels to Nicollet on Friday night.

Marshall 24, Blue Earth Area 7 – Quarterback Brad Bahlmann threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more to power the Tigers to a season-opening 24-7 victory over the Bucs during Big South Conference action Friday night at Wilson Field in Blue Earth.

After being delayed by lightning earlier in the game, the contest was called with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter due to the inclement weather.

Bahlmann, who completed 7 of 11 passes for 115 yards, connected on a 42-yard scoring strike to Andrew Hmielewski before Sam Duran kicked the PAT to swing a 7-0 lead to Marshall in the opening quarter.

Bahlmann then crossed the goal line on a 2-yard run before Duran kicked the point-after to double the Tigers’ lead to 14-0 during the second period.

Bahlmann extended Marshall’s edge to 21-0 by intermission by firing a 44-yard scoring spiral to Sam Marshall before Duran kicked the PAT.

Running back Bailey Olson countered for Blue Earth Area during the third frame by scoring on a 11-yard run before Sam Hahn kicked the PAT to reduce Marshall’s lead to 21-7.

Bahlmann then fired a 7-yard TD strike to Nick Saugstad before Duran kicked the PAT through the uprights for a 21-point lead near the end of the third quarter.

Sam Marshall rushed 11 times for 55 yards to top the Tigers’ ground game.

Quarterback Luke Schavey completed 8 of 12 passes for 54 yards and added 21 more yards on four carries to top the Bucs.

Derek Johnson made four catches for 38 yards for BEA.

Blue Earth Area (0-1) travels to Redwood Falls on Friday night for a 7 p.m. game with Redwood Valley, while Marshall (1-0) hits the road to Henry Sibley on Friday night.
