Schultz powers Madelia to rout

MADELIA -Madelia quarterback Kyle Schultz ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more to spark the Blackhawks’ season-opening 54-8 rout over Heron Lake-Okabena in a Southern Minnesota Confederacy football game on Friday night in Madelia.

Schultz ran 10 times for 100 yards, and completed 6-for-10 passes for 124 more yards. Schultz, however, had help in the backfield from running back Derrick Van Hee, who carried the ball 18 times for 172 yards, including a 91-yard touchdown.

On defense, Jack Denn tallied 16 tackles, recorded two quarterback sacks and delivered two fumble recoveries to pace the Blackhawks’ winning ways.

Jack Korteum contributed a fumble recovery and two quarterback sacks for Madelia (1-0), which travels to Renville County West next Friday night.

Iowa Preps

Okoboji 28, North Union 8 – The visiting Pioneers built a 25-0 edge through three quarters of season-opening Iowa prep football action Friday night in Armstrong before closing out a 20-point nonconference victory over the Warriors.

Quarterback Braden Ortman generated an incredible 175 yards on 19 carries and scored North Union’s 2-point conversion during the fourth.

Josh Braddock amassed 77 yards on 10 carries and scored the Warriors’ only touchdown, while teammate Trent Pedersen generated 69 yards on 14 totes.

Nathan Eaton recorded an interception for the North Union defense, while Eythan Blair and Pedersen topped the green-and-white tackling charts with eight and six stops, respectively.

North Union (0-1) travels to Sioux Rapids, Iowa, next Friday night to face Sioux Central.
