USC tennis posts win over Fairmont
WELLS – The United South Central Rebels posted straight-set wins in the singles bracket to help pace a 7-0 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals during non-league girls tennis action Wednesday in Wells.
Kia Legred captured back-to-back 6-1 set wins over Sophie Shelgren at No. 1 singles, while Linsey Thisius claimed back-to-back 6-2 set victories over Abby Fitzgerald at second singles.
Carly Weber netted a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Ellie Tonder during No. 3 singles action, while Emma Barnd outdueled Shantel Quist at the No. 4 singles position, 7-5, 6-0.
Fairmont’s Lauren Carlson and Madisyn Plumhoff battled USC’s Joyce Rubio and Leah Meyer to a three-setter at No. 1 doubles.
Carlson and Plumhoff netted a 6-4 opening-set triumph before Rubio and Meyer bounced back to outslug the Cardinal tandem by a 7-5 decision in the second set.
Rubio and Meyer then claimed the team tally by generating a 6-2 third-set victory over Carlson and Plumhoff.
Wendy Martinez and Kelly Neubauer served a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Fairmont’s Morgan Cihoski and Hayley Fogelson at second doubles, while USC’s third doubles team of Adriana Soto and Hayley Olson combined for a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Anna Hernes and Brittany Bass.
Fairmont (1-5) plays host to a triangular on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The Cardinals host Worthington at 4:30 p.m., followed by a dual meet against River Valley.
