Card JV football nets tie with JCC

FAIRMONT – Fairmont junior quarterback Tyler Tennyson threw three touchdown passes to Christian Engeman as the host Cardinals salvaged a 36-all tie with the Jackson County Central Huskies during junior varsity football action Tuesday night at Mahoney Field in Fairmont.

The visiting Huskies led after each of the first three quarters before the Cardinals got within two points with about five minutes to play on a 31-yard pass from Tennyson to Engeman. The Fairmont duo then connected on a two-point conversion pass to knot things up.

For the game, Tennyson completed 12 of 17 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Engeman had six receptions for 85 yards and three TDs. He also ran the ball twice for 54 yards.

Shyiem Thomas broke the ice for Fairmont in the first quarter with a 1-yard scoring run. A run for the two-point conversion failed.

Tennyson connected with Engeman on touchdown passes of 14 and 18 yards in the second quarter. The duo converted one two-point conversion on the two scores.

Junior Carter Lloyd scored on a 1-yard run for Fairmont in the third quarter, with Clayton Maakestad catching the two-point conversion pass from Tennyson.

For the game, Thomas rushed 10 times for 64 yards, while teammate Cody Freese carried 13 times for 56 yards to pace Fairmont’s ground game.

Brady Jensen gained 44 yards on the ground on five attempts, while Clayton Maakestad rushed three times for 36 yards.

On the defensive side for the Cardinals, sophomore Carter Lloyd pocketed an interception, while Dayton Nielsen, Walker Tordsen and Nick Moeller each recovered fumbles.

Fairmont (0-0-1) travels to St. Peter next Tuesday for a Big South Conference game.
