11th-rated MCW zips Fairmont in opener
TRIMONT – The Class A, No. 11-ranked Martin County West Mavericks coasted to a 25-10, 25-10, 25-17 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals during season-opening volleyball action Tuesday night in Trimont.
Jordan Gregory pounded out a match-best nine kills to pace a balanced Mavericks’ offensive attack, while teammates Taryn Tumbleson, Reilly Geistfeld and Hailey Leiding each delivered six kills in the winning performance.
McKenna Taylor supplied five kills for MCW, setter Ellie Kuehl distributed a match-best 27 assists, while Molly Klima contributed six digs.
Katelynn Noah and Courtney Mosloski paced the Cardinals’ frontline effort by connecting for five and four kills, respectively, while setter Emily Kim distributed 14 assists.
Tieryn Arens made 23 digs to pace Fairmont’s defensive effort, Haley Harder supplied 15 digs, while Aly Eversman and Sydney Glienke chipped in 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
Fairmont (0-1) plays host to defending Class AA state champion and No. 1-ranked Marshall on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Cardinal Gym.
Martin County West (1-0) plays host to Mankato Loyola on Thursday, Sept. 4, in Trimont.
Martin County West defeated Fairmont in the B-squad match, 25-17, 25-13, 15-9, on Tuesday, while Fairmont claimed the C-squad match over MCW, 17-25, 25-14, 15-9.
Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 3, Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain 0 – St. Mary’s fended off ML/GHEC in a closely-contested non-league clash between Knights, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20, Tuesday night in Northrop.
Rachel Shumski notched nine kills to top the hometown Knights, while teammate Danielle Schreader supplied seven kills.
Shelby Quinn and Hannah Johanson combined to dole out 15 set assists for ML/GHEC, while Marissa Steinhaus made a dozen digs on the match.
Martin Luther/GHEC (0-2) travels to Sleepy Eye Public on Thursday night.
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 3, Blue Earth Area 0 – The Knights swept the Bucs in a nonconference season-opener, 25-11, 25-12, 25-19, on Tuesday night in Lake Crystal.
Alissa Norman produced two kills, seven set assists and one block for Blue Earth Area, while Lindsey Norman notched three kills, nine digs and one block.
Kaylor Jacobs supplied two kills and eight digs for the Bucs, teammate Devyn Braunhausen tallied three kills and made eight digs, Mariah Twedt scooped up 14 opposing spikes and Kylie Ahl doled out three set assists.
Jacobs also connected on 8 of 10 serves, while Elizabeth Ellis was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line.
Blue Earth Area (0-1) plays host to nonconference opponent Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday night in Blue Earth.
Sleepy Eye Public 3, Truman 0 – The Indians outlasted the Bluejays, 27-25, 25-19, 25-15, during season-opening non-league action Tuesday night in Sleepy Eye.
Stephanie Jahnz recorded five kills and 11 digs to top Truman, while teammate Elizabeth Kotewa delivered four kills to complement 10-for-10 serving, including a pair of aces.
Christine Hansen doled out 16 set assists for the Bluejays, Courtney Zaharia made 14 digs, while Jordan Smith tallied 14 digs. Smith also served three aces behind a 7-for-9 performance at the line.
Truman (0-1) plays host to Valley Conference opponent Nicollet on Thursday, Sept. 4.
