‘Transition Day’ planned
SHERBURN – The first Martin County West High School football game of the 2014 season will be against New Ulm Cathedral at 7 p.m. Friday in Sherburn.
Prior to the game, there will be a Maverick football tailgate party from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Martin County Pork Producers will grill pork chops.
Come out for a pork chop on a stick, stay for the game and support the Mavericks.
There will be a “transition day” for students in grades 7-9 and for any new Martin County West junior/senior high students from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at Martin County West Junior/Senior High School in Sherburn.
There will be orientation activities designed to assist students new to the building in order for them to make a positive and effective transition to the junior/senior high school.
Martin County West FFA will grill hot dogs and serve lunch to students attending.
Busing will be provided to pick up students at 7:45 a.m. in Ceylon, 8 a.m. in Welcome and 8:15 a.m. in Trimont.
School begins for Martin County West students in grades 7-12 on Sept. 2, while classes for students in K-6 begin Sept. 3.
Parent/teacher conferences for students in grades K-6 are being held today and also Sept. 2.
Six new teachers will be on staff at Martin County West Junior/Senior High School this year. They include: Mr. Dustin Oldenburg, who will be the 7-12 grade vocal music instructor; Mrs. Hilary Elliott, who will teach eighth grade physical education; Mrs. Leah Rode-Mulder, who will teach Spanish; Ms. Karrah Libra, who will teach social studies; Mrs. Amanda Weihe, who will be the mathematics instructor; and Mrs. Jessica Daberkow, who will teach business and ag classes.
New staff at Martin County West Elementary School this year include: Abby Smith, kindergarten; Mallory Rudolph, first grade; Phillip Rotunda, second grade; Dustin Oldenburg, music; Hilary Elliott, physical education; and Cara Sinn, who will be the new school nurse. Nickole Bowie will teach kindergarten music, and Connie Stenson will switch from first grade to second grade.
Martin County West Community Education will hold “dance team” classes for students in grades 3 through 8 on Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 9, at the Sherburn Community Hall. Congratulations to our local chef, Seth Lintelman from the Cup ‘N Saucer cafe in Sherburn. Seth recently won first place from the judges and the People’s Choice category at the pork cookoff at the Martin County Fair.
