Vera M. Ostermann
ELMORE – Vera M. Ostermann, 95, of Elmore, Minn., passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at the Titonka Care Center. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, Minn. A private burial will take place following the service. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at Shiloh Lutheran Church, Elmore.
Vera was born Nov. 16, 1918, in rural Titonka, Iowa, to Carl and Hilka (Pankuk) Giesking. She graduated from Titonka High School in 1937. The summer she graduated she attended teachers schooling, and came back to Titonka and taught for several years. On June 18, 1941, she was united in marriage to Elmer Ostermann. It was a double wedding with Vera’s sister, Leona Schmidt. Vera and Elmer farmed and raised turkeys until moving to Elmore, Minn., in 1955, where they started a produce business. After a fire took the produce business they continued on with a grocery store, another produce store and a drive-in. After several years together and owning businesses, they opened a bakery and coffee shop which Vera owned and operated until she was 88. Vera enjoyed working in her terrace garden. She was well known for her beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed reading, traveling, spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Joy (John) Holbrook of Spicer Minn., Janice (Ken) Huisman of Sanborn, Minn., Judy (Wes) Remmers of Modesto, Calif., and Jeanne (Bill) Moore of Modesto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; brother, Carl “Butch” (Dorothy) Giesking of Titonka, Iowa; sisters, Leona Schmidt and Clara Mayland; sister-in-law, Alice Giesking.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer Ostermann; brothers, Erwin “Shortie” Giesking, Lewis Giesking, Merle Giesking; a great-granddaughter; and one great-great-granddaughter.
