Martins homer to series sweep
TRACY – The Fairmont Martins’ batting order displayed its power by cranking five home runs during Saturday’s first-round Region 13C amateur baseball playoff game in Tracy.
Adam Schmidt and Luke Becker each hammered a pair of round-trippers, while teammate Jon Wilson slugged a solo shot to help the Martins derail the Tracy Express, 13-0 in seven innings of Game 2 of their best-of-3 postseason series.
Fairmont routed Tracy in a 14-0, seven-inning decision during Game 1 on Wednesday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.
The Martins (19-7) open their second-round best-of-3 regional series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Wolf Field in Fairmont.
Fairmont’s opponent will be determined at tonight’s seeding meeting.
Becker, who produced four hits including a double on the game, drilled a solo home run during the top of the first inning to jumpstart the Martins’ offensive attack.
Becker, who also connected for a home run during the seventh inning, finished with a co-game-high five RBIs.
Schmidt, who generated three hits and a co-game-high five RBIs, and Wilson later connected on back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the second inning. Schmidt later slugged a round-tripper in the sixth.
Shaun McGuire doubled, Andy Reiter went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Jon Ellis chipped in a hit for the Martins.
McGuire pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits, while striking out six and issuing two bases-on-balls to capture the victory.
Schmidt struck out two, issued one walk and gave up one hit in working a scoreless seventh inning of relief.

In other Region 13C playoff action on Saturday, the Hadley Buttermakers edged Windom, 6-4, to sweep their first-round series 2-0.
The Milroy Irish rolled past Heron Lake, 10-0, to complete a 2-0 sweep of their opening best-of-3 series.
