Shirley M. Ries

FAIRMONT – Services for Shirley M. Ries, 85, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, near Ringsted, Iowa. Shirley was called to her heavenly home Wednesday afternoon, July 16, 2014, at the St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., lovingly surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be two hours prior to the time of service from 9-11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Shirley M. (Gomer) Ries was born Oct. 25, 1928, in Denver, Colo., to Emanuel and Lena (Davy) Gomer. Shirley attended elementary school and graduated from high school in Denver. After high school, Shirley was employed with IBM. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, Shirley met the love of her life, LaVern. On June 29, 1952, they were united in marriage in Colorado. LaVern took his bride back to the family farm in Armstrong, Iowa, where they milked cows and farmed. To this union, they were blessed with four children: Linn, Lee, Wendy and Tammy. On March 3, 1975, LaVern died from a heart attack. In November 1983, Shirley made a new home in Fairmont, Minn. She became very active at Grace Lutheran Church attending circle and helping to lead and guide the widows support group. Shirley served several years as a volunteer for the Fairmont Hospital Auxiliary and on the Hospital board. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge. Shirley would play any chance she got. Her family was her life and visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren were held dear. She cherished her dear friends made while living in Fairmont.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Linn L. Ries and his wife, Sharla of Armstrong, Iowa, Lee A. Ries and his wife, Janet of Bloomington, Ill., Wendy M. (Ries) Besel and her husband, Ken of St. James, Minn., and Tammy L. (Ries) Bass and her husband, Vern of Truman, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Babe Gomer, and Glorian Justice and her husband, Donald; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel and Lena Gomer; husband, LaVern Ries; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alvera and Lewis Ries; a brother, Ronald Gomer; and a brother-in-law, Gene Ries.
