Fairmont legion sweeps twinbill

NEW ULM – The Fairmont American Legion Post 36 baseball team swept New Ulm Blue during doubleheader action on Thursday in New Ulm.

Matt Lytle pitched five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three to help Fairmont claim a 9-0 victory during Game 1. In Game 2, Fairmont was able to hold off a seventh-inning rally to take the 7-6 win.

Nate Johnson pitched the final two innings of the opener to preserve Fairmont’s winning effort.

Jack Waletich ripped three hits, including a double and a triple, and scored two runs to help pace Fairmont’s offensive efforts.

Luke Becker added two hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored two runs, while Jay Ruen, Ryan Noll and Johnson each had two hits. Ruen had one RBI, while Noll and Johnson each doubled and scored a run.

Jesse Baumgartner pitched for New Ulm, allowing nine runs on nine hits, walking three, hitting one batter and striking out one to take the loss.

Brandon Bernacek had New Ulm’s lone hit of the opening game.

Ruen scored a pair of runs, while Parker Monsen added a hit and crossed the plate twice to pace Fairmont’s victory in the nightcap.

Becker had two hits, including a two-run triple, while Waletich smacked an RBI triple and scored a run.

Noll, Ben Abel and Johnson each tacked on a hit, with Johnson driving in a run. Nathan Gillis added a pinch-hit double for Fairmont.

Becker pitched three innings, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out one to earn the win.

Johnson and Ruen each pitched an inning, combining to allow just one hit.

Noll then pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing six runs on no hits, striking out one, walking two and hitting three batters.

Lytle got the final out of the game for Fairmont, allowing just one hit in relief.

Nick Vogel and Jarin Spence drove in a pair of runs for New Ulm, while Alex Stark had a pair of hits and scored a run in Game 2.

Fairmont (5-4) hosts Mankato American at 5 p.m. Monday at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont before taking on New Ulm Gold in Game 2 of the split doubleheader.
