Martins derail Express in Game 1
FAIRMONT – Fairmont right-hander Taylor Nawrocki held the Tracy Express to just two hits through six innings as the Martins earned a 14-0, seven-inning victory during Region 13C amateur baseball playoff action on Wednesday night at Herb Wolf Field.
Fairmont (18-7) and Tracy (0-19) square off in Game 2 of the best-of-three postseason series at 2 p.m. Saturday in Tracy.
Nawrocki struck out 13, walked two and hit one batter in throwing nearly perfect six innings.
“I didn’t think that Taylor was throwing with his usual velocity, but he still did a great job for us tonight,” said Fairmont player/coach Adam Schmidt. “Striking out 14 guys in a game is pretty good, and defensively, we made the plays behind him when we needed to.”
The Martins also got some offense, scoring 14 runs on nine hits throughout the game.
Luke Becker, who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBIs, got the scoring going for the Martins in the first inning.
Luke Becker drew a walk and then cruised into second with a stolen base.
Levi Becker then hit a flyball to right field to advance Luke Becker to third.
Max Waletich then delivered an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Luke Becker to put the Martins up 1-0.
“I think offensively we were getting in a rhythm it seemed like,” said Schmidt. “We have a lot of our guys coming back now to play and so it really seems like we are getting solid hits. Tonight they helped us with some walks, but we still got the hits when we needed to.”
Schmidt then led off the second, reaching on an error to start another rally for the Martins.
Andy Reiter drove a hit to right field, allowing Schmidt to round second and reach third base.
Tanner Nawocki, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, hit a grounder to the shortstop for the forceout, but allowed Schmidt to cruise home to go ahead 2-0.
In the top of the third inning, Taylor Nawrocki worked out of a bases-loaded jam.
Tracy’s Cody Anderson drew a leadoff walk in the third before Taylor Nawrocki struck out Tylan Gylling.
Taylor Nawrocki then walked Jordan Lanoue to put runners on first and second with one out.
Chaz Waballe was hit with a Taylor Nawrocki delivery to load the bases, but the Martin hurler struck out the next two batters to keep the shutout alive.
The Martins added two runs in the third before tacking on three more in the fourth to go ahead 7-0.
Tanner Nawrocki ripped a double down the third baseline to start the rally, before Scott Chirpich hit a double to center to move Nawrocki to third.
Luke Becker then blasted a hit to the outfield for a one-out triple, scoring both Tanner Nawrocki and Chirpich.
Levi Becker was then hit by a pitch, putting runners on the corners, before Waletich hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Luke Becker for the RBI.
Dean Rohlid pitched four innings for the Express, allowing five runs on five hits, walking two and striking out two to absorb the loss.
Jared Holland and Gylling combined to pitch the final two innings in relief, allowing seven runs and three hits.
Levi Becker pitched the final inning for the Martins, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
