New storage facility opens

FAIRMONT – A new self-storage facility has opened in Fairmont, and owner Danny Klous has plans for more.

“We just finished, and we have another slab for a second building, the same as this one,” Klous said.

The building features 44 units ranging in size from 5-by-10 feet to 10-by-30 feet.

“The 10-by-20 is the most popular,” Klous said.

Klous bought the land last year and had it prepped and ready for construction in November. The all-steel building with cement floors was “like a big erector set” that bolted together.

“I have room to build five buildings, but I’m building for the demand, as the demand starts coming in – hopefully by the end of the year,” Klous said.

He also owns the land across the street from the new facility, which creates another option he is offering.

“That can be used for RVs, bigger things that don’t need a cover,” he said.

Klous was prompted to build the storage facility because of the volume of seasonal items owned by area residents. Seasonal things, such as snowmobiles, boats, personal watercraft and motorcycles, often create storage problems in their off-seasons.

“Need? There’s always been [a need] or we wouldn’t have as many [storage sites] as we do,” said Dave Olson, owner of Olson Rental, which owns the only other storage facilities in Fairmont.

“We have availability in about every size,” Olson said.

The company has three sites in Fairmont and two in Blue Earth.

Olson, who has been in the self-storage business for 24 years, also has future plans for expansion with climate-controlled units.

“That is an idea we’ve been considering,” he said.

Currently, there are no self-storage units with that feature.
