Cougars scratch Warriors
MANSON, Iowa – Christian Whitehill pitched three scoreless innings of relief to complement two hits and one RBI from the batter’s box to help the Manson-Northwest Webster Cougars scratch out a 2-1 regular-season Iowa prep baseball win over the North Union Warriors on Thursday night in Manson, Iowa.
Whitehill did not allow a hit, while striking out three and walking two in closing out the final three frames to earn the victory.
Whitehill also went 2-for-2 with one RBI, teammate Alex Busch went 2-for-3 with a double, while Dylan Samuelson added one RBI behind a 1-for-3 performance.
Cody Runksmeier and Spencer Ricke collected one hit each for the Warriors, while teammate Logan Hellman scored North Union’s lone run in the top of the fourth.
Colin Runksmeier started on the mound for the Warriors, allowing two runs – both unearned – on five hits in six innings of work. Runksmeier struck out two and did not issue a walk in absorbing the loss.
Cougars’ starting pitcher Braden Moser allowed two hits in 1 2/3 shutout innings before giving way to Samuelson on the hill. Samuelson allowed one run on no hits, struck out three and walked four in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
North Union (11-16) faces St. Mary’s of Storm Lake at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Iowa Class 1A, District 3 playoffs in Alta, Iowa.
