WBE legion flattens USC
TRUMAN – The Winnebago/Blue Earth American Legion baseball team erupted for 18 runs to beat United South Central 18-7 in six innings during Division II, Sub-District baseball action on Friday night in Truman.
WBE (6-7) advances to play St. James at 2:30 p.m. today in a winners-bracket game in St. James.
USC (10-6) plays Mountain Lake at 9:30 a.m. today in an elimination game.
USC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Grant Becher smacked a hit to right, before Dylan Herman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Becher to second.
Walker Linde then hit a grounder to second, allowing Becher to advance to third.
Steve Voigt was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners before Riley Kloos delivered an RBI single.
WBE then batted through its lineup to score five runs in the third to take the lead.
“This game was kind of a sample of how our season has been,” said WBE head coach Steve Sonnicksen. “We’ve had our struggles, but we have been able to fight our way back. And tonight I thought we did a good job of that.”
Kaylan Legred led off with a hit before David Franta scorched a single up the middle. Legred and Franta then executed a double steal, taking third and second.
Alan Davids, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, delivered the first of his run-scoring hits to left.
Legred cruised home before Franta sprinted in from second to take a 2-1 lead.
Christian Haugh had an infield hit to put runners on first and third for WBE.
With two outs, Alex Stewart sent a ball over the fence for his first career home run to give WBE a 5-1 lead.
USC added two runs each in the third and fourth innings to even the game at 5-5, but WBE rallied again.
WBE generated another five-run inning in the fifth to go ahead 10-5.
With the bases loaded, Davids came through for the second time in the game, hitting a two-run single to right.
With Franta on third and Davids on first, Brandyn Olsen, who was 2-for-4, sizzled a hit up the middle to score Franta.
Seth Anderson, who went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, drove in two with a double to right field, scoring Davids and Olson to make it 10-5.
In addition to his offensive efforts, Davids pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs – five earned – on nine hits, striking out two and walking one to earn the win.
“That was the first time I’ve seen Alan pitch for us this season. He pitched varsity this year and has pitched for the younger teams, but it was great to see him pitch for us tonight,” said Sonnicksen.
WBE tacked on eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 18-5.
Despite USC’s sixth-inning rally for a pair of runs, WBE held on for the win.
Mathew Bell came in and pitched the final 2/3 innings in relief.
Franta finished 2-for-5, Stewart went 2-for-4 and Legred was 3-for-3 at the plate for WBE.
Riley Kloos went 3-for-4 to top USC’s offensive efforts.
