Warriors finish 4-0 at tourney

SPENCER, Iowa – The Class 2A No. 7-ranked North Union Warriors softball team finished the Spencer Tournament with two wins on Saturday to go 4-0 on the weekend in Spencer, Iowa.

The Warriors downed Estherville 3-1 in the first game on Saturday, before outlasting LeMars Gehlen Catholic 8-7 in Game 2.

Sarah Rolling started off the two-run second inning in the first game with a hit for the Warriors.

Breanna Anderson then followed that up with a double, allowing Rolling to race home to go ahead 1-0.

Breanna Anderson then was able to sprint home on Erica Anderson’s RBI single, giving the Warriors a 2-0 edge.

Autumn Boland reached first on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning, before ending up on third on Dena Looft’s base hit.

Boland then scored the Warriors third run of the game on a passed ball.

Estherville had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but the Warrior defense shut them down to hold on for the win.

Looft went 2-for-3 in the game, while Rolling and Erica Anderson both went 1-for-2 and Breanna Anderson and Taylor Mathine went 1-for-2.

Peyton Oleson earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out five.

Mathine came up with the critical hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Warriors the 8-7 win in Game 2.

With the score tied 7-7 and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Anna Ingalls got a base hit to start off the scoring rally.

Erica Anderson added a hit in the next at-bat, and then Mathine delivered a single to left to score Ingalls for the game-winning run.

A four-run third inning helped the Warriors jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Looft and Rolling started the inning with base hits for the Warriors.

Breanna Anderson was then able to score both Looft and Rolling with a two-run single with one out in the inning.

Ingalls walked to put runners on first and second, before Mathine was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Kyarsten Mullen reached first on a throwing error, allowing both Breanna Anderson and Ingalls to score to make it 6-0.

After LeMars Gehlen Catholic scored four runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to two, the Warriors tacked on another run in sixth.

Mathine had a leadoff single, and then pinch runner, Shaylee Hanning swiped second.

A throwing error on Looft’s hard hit grounder to shortstop, allowed Hanning to touch home to make it a 7-4 game.

Looft, Rolling, Breanna Anderson and Erica Anderson each went 2-for-4 in the game.

Looft drove in one RBI and scored a run, while Breanna Anderson tallied two RBIs and two runs scored.

Mathine went 3-for-3 from the plate and Ingalls scored two runs in going 2-for-3.

Oleson earned the win, giving up seven runs – four earned – striking out six and walking one.

North Union (23-5) plays host to Harris-Lake Park in a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. today in Swea City.
