New Ulm Gold eases by Post 36

NEW ULM – The New Ulm Gold legion baseball squad scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to a 7-1 victory over Fairmont American Legion Post 36 in their season opening game on Monday in New Ulm.

Grant Kannegiesser helped the Eagles get off to a quick start, smacking one of his two hits including a double in scoring two runs in the game.

Kannegiesser also helped drive Chase Meyer in off the base paths. Meyer had an RBI single, but scored twice in the game for New Ulm.

Jay Knowles kept the Fairmont offense quiet, pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing just five hits. Knowles struck out four, walked two and gave up just one run to earn the win.

Tyler Dittrich pitched for the final out of the game for New Ulm Gold.

Parker Monsen went 3-for-4 from the plate for Fairmont, scoring the lone run for the visitors.

Spencer Chirpich and Jack Waletich recorded the other hits for Fairmont in the game.

Matt Lytle pitched three innings, allowing seven runs – five earned – on seven hits, striking out one and walking two to absorb the loss.

Nate Johnson pitched the final three innings, only giving up one hit, walking one, hitting a batter and striking out one in his relief efforts.

Fairmont Post 36 (0-1) travels to play Sleepy Eye Post 7 at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Sleepy Eye.
