FAIRMONT – Funeral services for Laurie Goerndt, 49, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. Burial will be held at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.
Laurie passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2014, at her home in Fairmont after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of the arrangements for the family.
Laurie Unke Goerndt was born Oct. 21, 1964, in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Roland and Shirley (Riggle) Unke. Laurie attended school in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1983. While in high school, Laurie worked at the Lutz Wing and was a candy striper at the Fairmont Community Hospital. On July 15, 1995, Laurie was united in marriage to Harold Goerndt on the Unke Family Farm. Laurie was a registered nurse’s aid and worked for 10 years in the Lutz Wing, nine years with Home Healthcare and was a nurse’s assistant in the Med-Surgery department at Fairmont Hospital. Laurie enjoyed the peaceful things in life like canoeing, boating, fishing and Boundary Water trips. She also enjoyed being with her family and helping her grandchildren.
Those that will cherish her memory include her husband, Harold Goerndt of Fairmont; two children, Candace Schwebke and her husband, Dustin of Fairmont, and Brandon Goerndt of Fairmont; three grandchildren, Alyse, Brian and Kamden; parents, Roland and Shirley Unke of Fairmont; five siblings, Kim Johnson and special friend, Dan of Maple Grove, Minn., Scott Unke and his wife, Caroline of Fairmont, Kurt Unke and his wife, GeDee of Fairmont, Todd Unke and special friend, Lisa of Fairmont, and Lisa Schultz and her husband, Paul of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bev and Duane Horejsi of Montgomery, Minn., Dale Goerndt of Blue Earth, Susan and Duane Philipp of Fairmont; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, other relatives and friends.
Laurie was preceded in death by her grandparents, Grandpa and Grandma Riggle, Grandpa and Grandma Unke; parents-in-law, Gordon and Helen Goerndt; and one brother-in-law, Mike Johnson.
