FAIRMONT- Funeral Service for Muriel D. Erickson, 85, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 3 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at Fairmont Baptist Church, with interment in Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Muriel passed away on Thursday evening, June 12, 2014, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is in charge of arrangements.
Muriel Stoneberg Erickson was born Feb. 1, 1929, in their farm home near Chandler, Minn., in Murray County to Alfred and Alice (Synerholm) Stoneberg. She attended a one-room rural school for eight years. She attended high school in Slayton for three years. In June of 1946, her parents retired and moved to Worthington, where she finished her senior year of high school
In 1947, she attended the Teacher Training Department in Lamberton, Minn., graduating in June of 1948. She then taught in both one and two room rural schools in Noble and Murray counties for seven years. During these years, she continued her education in off-campus and on-campus classes in Mankato State Teacher’s college. In 1952, she earned her two-year degree and, in 1958, her BA degree. She also taught 5th and 6th grades in both Jackson (four years) and Hutchinson, Minn. (5years).
On Oct. 16, 1964, she and Obed Erickson were married in Worthington, Minn. They established their home in Fairmont and raised their two daughters, Koreen and LeAnn. She returned to teaching for one year in Truman, Minn., and for three years at the Fairmont Baptist Christian Day School. After this, she subbed in the Fairmont schools for several years.
In Fairmont Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She later was a member of the Senior Single Women’s Group in her church. Muriel enjoyed her teaching, reading, sewing clothes, and crocheting as well as traveling.
Muriel is survived by her two daughters, Koreen (Dean) Reynolds and LeAnn (Mike) Thorburn; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
