Warriors edge Spirit Lake, 6-3
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa – The Class 2A, No. 10-ranked North Union Warriors softball team broke open a scoreless game in the third inning, holding on for a 6-3 victory over Spirit Lake on Friday in Spirit Lake.
Taylor Mathine led off a three-run third, getting plunked by a pitch. Jessica Govern then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mathine to second base.
Kyarsten Mullen, who went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs, then drove in Mathine with a single.
Autumn Boland, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, then smacked a double to score Mullen to go ahead 2-0.
Sarah Rolling, who went 3-for-4, then made it 3-0 by scoring Boland with a two-out single.
The Indians rallied for two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh, but North Union was able to earn the win.
Peyton Oleson pitched seven innings, allowing three runs – one earned – on six hits, striking out three and walking one to earn the complete-game win.
North Union (9-3) plays Clay Central-Everly in a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. today in Royal, Iowa.
