Oleson pitches Warriors to sweep

SWEA CITY – Ace right-hander Peyton Oleson pitched all seven innings of Iowa Class 2A, No. 8-ranked North Union’s 5-1 opening-game victory over Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Monday.

Oleson, who iced down her arm during the 15-minute interim between the Corn Belt Conference softball doubleheader’s games, returned to the pitcher’s chalked circle to start Game 2 in Swea City.

Sarah Rolling, Dena Looft and Kyarsten Mullen, however, made sure that their Warrior teammate would not have to pitch another seven frames in the nightcap.

Mullen singled twice in the bottom of the third inning, Looft collected three RBIs behind a single and a double, while Rolling singled and clouted the game-ending two-run home run with two out.

Rolling and Looft combined for five RBIs behind a 5-for-6 offensive performance in Game 2, while Oleson fired a three-hit shutout to guide North Union to a 12-0, three-inning triumph to complete its twinbill sweep over the Titans.

“I kept looking at the scoreboard, thinking, ‘If we score two more runs, we can end this game early,'” North Union mentor Art Ingalls said in reference to his lineup’s 11-run outburst during the home half of the third in Game 2. “I hadn’t planned on pitching Peyton more than two innings in the second game, but she didn’t throw many pitches through three shutout innings. I had planned on taking her out before the fourth (inning), but didn’t have to make that decision.

“That’s the first time we’ve beaten anyone by the 12-run rule (after three innings) this season.”

Mullen, who went 4-for-5 on the doubleheader, utilized her track speed to stake the Warriors to an early 1-0 lead in Game 2. Mullen singled, stole second base, took third on a passed ball and trotted home on Autumn Boland’s sacrifice fly during the bottom of the first.

Mullen then led off the third with another single and steal of second base before Looft lined an RBI single up the middle. Looft then wheeled to second on Rolling’s sharp single to center before Oleson reached on the first of three straight Titan errors to load the bases.

Looft and Rolling both circled the bases when Anna Ingalls’ grounder was overthrown at first base before Taylor Mathine loaded the bases again when her nubber to the GTRA pitcher was mishandled.

Erica Anderson then launched a two-run single to the right-center gap that resulted in the Titan outfielders colliding, with the ensuing entanglement allowing Mathine to reach third and Anderson to wheel into second.

Mathine then crossed the plate on Emma Engelby’s sacrifice fly before Mullen drilled a hard grounder off the Titan shortstop to plate Anderson for an 8-0 lead.

Boland, who slugged a key two-run home run – No. 4 on the season – in Game 1, then walked before Looft made a bid for a home run by driving a two-run double to the fence in right-center.

Looft then scored ahead of Rolling, who swatted her fourth home run of the season deep over the right-field fence to send the crowd home early.

Oleson struck out three and issued one walk in three shutout innings in Game 2 to earn the victory.

Oleson recorded eight strikeouts and issued two walks, while allowing one unearned run on four hits in seven innings of work in the opener to net the complete-game victory.

Mullen singled and crossed the plate when Boland smashed an offering from GTRA hurler Taylor Park over the left-field fence with two out in the bottom of the third inning in Game 1. Boland’s two-run shot broke a scoreless tie.

Oleson then assisted her own cause by singling in the fourth before courtesy runner Aly Bierstedt eventually scored on Mathine’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Engelby then singled, took second on Mullen’s sacrifice bunt and circled the bases on Boland’s RBI single to right in the fifth.

The Warriors then manufactured another solo run in the sixth as Oleson walked and courtesy runner Shaylee Hanning stole second, took third on a throwing error and scored on Ingalls’ RBI fielder’s choice.

Boland went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the opener, while Oleson went 2-for-2.

North Union (8-1) travels to Fonda, Iowa, tonight for a game with Newell-Fonda.
