North Union coasts by GHV, 10-1

GARNER, Iowa – Cody Runksmeier produced a game-best four RBIs behind three hits and scored a pair of runs to power the North Union Warriors to a 10-1 Iowa prep baseball victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Wednesday night in Garner, Iowa.

Cody Runksmeier went 3-for-4, including a double, from the leadoff spot in the Warriors’ batting order, while teammate Colin Runksmeier doubled and collected two RBIs.

Spencer Ricke, Corey Vaske and Braden Ortman each generated two of North Union’s 13 hits, with all three driving in one run each. Ortman also crossed the plate three times.

Ryan Larson contributed a double to the Warriors’ effort, Logan Hellman went 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Carter Engelby chipped in one hit and scored one run.

Vaske pitched four shutout innings of one-hit baseball to earn the victory. Vaske recorded nine strikeouts and issued three walks.

Alex Krantz allowed one run on two hits, struck out four and walked two in three innings of relief for the Warriors.

Jake Wolf went 2-for-3 with one RBI to top GHV.

Spencer Shaw started on the mound for GHV, allowing five runs – only one earned – on two hits in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss. Shaw struck out five and issued four walks on the game.

North Union (1-0) travels to Spirit Lake, Iowa, today for a 5:30 p.m. game.
