Hardman to vie in open 100 at state

DES MOINES, Iowa – North Union sophomore sprinter MaKayla Hardman will set her sights on Iowa Class 1A state track and field hardware today.

Hardman will run the third leg on the Warriors’ sprint medley relay team that hits the Drake Relays’ track in Des Moines, Iowa, at 9 a.m. this morning.

Morgan Rahm will get North Union out of the blocks before handing the baton to Kyarsten Mullen. Mullen then exchanges the handoff with Hardman, who turns over the anchor leg to Olivia Marlow. The Warriors’ foursome enters today’s race with the sixth-best qualifying time of 1:56.38.

Hardman will then return to the tarred surface around 12:15 p.m. today to compete for the 100-meter state championship. Hardman posted a seventh-place qualifying time of 13.2 seconds during Thursday’s Class 1A preliminaries.

Unfortunately for North Union, Hardman did not qualify for today’s 200-meter dash finals. Hardman generated a 12th-place time of 27.18 in Thursday’s prelims.

The Warriors’ Sara Rolling, Ashley Olson, Emily Hagebock and Jordan Guerdet posted a 21st-place time of 1:13.24 during Thursday’s shuttle hurdle relays’ prelims to miss qualifying for today’s final round.

Aric Runge netted 22nd place in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles in 59.98 on Friday.

The North Union senior hurdler also took 21st in the 110-meter high hurdles’ prelims. Runge did not advance with his time of 16.88.

Dyson Umscheid rounded out the Warriors’ individual state qualifiers by hurling the discus to a 23rd-place distance of 116 feet even.
