James K. Baarts
FAIRMONT – Services for James K. Baarts, 81, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial, with military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County VFW Post 1222, will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, in Fairview Memorial Park, Fairmont.
Jim passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health SystemFairmont. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 26, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of the arrangements for the family.
James Kenneth “Bud” Baarts was born May 14, 1933, in Madelia, Minn., the son of Lorin and Anna (Wright) Baarts. He lived in Truman until 1943 when they moved to Fairmont. He continued his schooling in Fairmont and was baptized on May 2, 1953. He was united in marriage to Dolores Bremer on May 3, 1953, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. He entered the U.S. Army on May 20, 1953, served until his honorable discharge in May of 1955 and returned to Fairmont. Jim was employed at Fairmont Railway Motors as a machinist from 1951 until retiring in August 1991. He was also the local representative for the UAW Autoworkers Union. Jim enjoyed all music, especially old-time and country western. He was very competitive in all types of games, enjoyed going camping, was proud of his lawn and loved to be a practical joker. Jim was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont where he served on various boards and he was very thankful for the Christian education for his children.
Those who will cherish his memory include: his wife, Dolores Baarts of Fairmont; four children, Julie (David) Wright of Richfield, Minn., Joni (Keith) Wiederhoeft of Mankato, Minn., Michael (Debra) Baarts of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jenni Evans of Chaska, Minn.; grandchildren, Sarah (Rev. Dan.) Hartwig, Jordan Wright, Anna Wright and fianc, Jacob Duppong, Traci (Randy) Routier, Terri (Jon) Michaletz, Tammi (Sean) Holmes, Shalom (Kenneth) Lancaster, Christina Cooper, Matthew (Laura) Baarts, Drew, Michael and Hannah Evans; eight great-grandchildren, Ayana, Tori, Christopher, Davyn, Magdalen, Mychael, Philemon and Adisyn; sisters, Edythe (Leonard) Bonstead, Phyllis (Ben) Smith, Marilyn (Gene) Borchardt, and Eunice Koestler, all of Fairmont; sister-in-law, Donna (Jon) Harley; brother-in-law, Jerry O’Sell; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Hannah Wright and Ryan Baarts; nephew, Timothy Harley; sister, Janice Bicknase and her husband, Raymond; brother, Merlyn Baarts and his wife, Marsha; brother-in-law, Richard Bremer; sister-in-law, Barbara O’Sell.
