No. 3 FHS posts win over ’Jays
WASECA – Class AA, No. 3-ranked Fairmont extended its winning streak to 17 in a row by outslugging the Waseca Bluejays, 15-8, during South Central Conference baseball action Tuesday at Tink Larson Field in Waseca.
Luke Becker drilled his seventh home run of the season – a solo shot – to snap an 8-all tie in the top of the sixth inning before the Cardinals erupted for six more runs in the seventh.
Jack Waletich, who went 3-for-5, delivered a bases-loaded triple in the seventh to widen Fairmont’s lead to 13-8. Waletich finished with a game-best five RBIs and scored two runs.
Becker also hammered a two-run double in the third inning to finish 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Spencer Chirpich, Tyler Tennyson, Nathan Gillis and Parker Monsen each generated two hits to the Cardinals’ 15-hit performance. All four players crossed the plate twice, with Chirpich and Tennyson driving in one run each.
Ben Abel and Cole Emler each went 1-for-2, with Abel collecting two RBIs and scoring once, while Emler crossed the plate twice.
Matt Lytle allowed four earned runs on six hits, walked three and struck out one in 4 2/3 innings of relief to net the win for Fairmont.
Gillis started on the mound, giving up four earned runs on three hits, while walking three in 2 1/3 innings.
Fairmont (17-1, 8-1 SCC) travels to St. James on Thursday.

Eli Green pitched a no-hitter to guide Fairmont to a 4-2 victory over Waseca during junior varsity action Tuesday in Waseca.
Green allowed two runs – both unearned – on no hits, struck out one and walked one in seven innings to earn the victory.
Clayton Maakestad had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, while Evan Closs and Nate Johnson each generated one hit and one RBI.
Kale Fritz and Chris Andrews added one hit apiece for Fairmont.
Matt Larson hurled a three-hit complete game to steer Fairmont to a 6-1 win over Waseca during C-squad action Tuesday.
Larson allowed one earned run, struck out six and walked three in seven innings to net the win.
Christian Engeman, Cody Freese, Cory Lyons, Justin Schwieger and Larson each produced three hits for the Cardinals (7-5), with Larson collecting a triple and Freese doubling.
Mankato Loyola 5, Martin County West 2 – The Crusaders cruised by the Mavericks 5-2 during Valley Conference action on Tuesday in Welcome.
Alex Biehn, Michael Andrews and Brandon Williamson each had a hit for MCW, while Alex Saxen cranked a double.
Biehn pitched three innings, while Tony Payne and Jake Faber combined to pitch the final four innings.
Martin County West (8-5, 5-3 Valley) faces United South Central in Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal action at 1 p.m. Saturday in Wells.
