Fairmont stays alive in section playoffs

PIPESTONE – No. 5-seeded Fairmont rallied for an 8-7 extra-inning victory over No. 4-seeded Luverne during opening Section 3AA softball playoff action Tuesday in Pipestone before the Class AA, No. 2-ranked and undefeated host Arrows downed the Cardinals in second-round action.

Fairmont (12-10) plays Morris Area/ Chokio-Alberta (16-6) in an 11 a.m. sectional elimination game on Saturday in Marshall.

Pipestone Area (20-0) faces Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (15-6) in a 12:30 p.m. undefeated-bracket game on Saturday in Marshall.

Courtney Guetter delivered what proved to be the game-winning RBI single during the top of the ninth inning to help Fairmont eclipse Luverne, 8-7. Courtney Williams, who was courtesy running for Tieryn Arens, reached third base on Kayla Lardy’s single before scoring on Guetter’s hit.

Arens’ grounder earlier was mishandled to allow Aly Eversman to cross the plate with Fairmont’s first of two ninth-inning runs.

Guetter went 3-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored to pace Fairmont’s 13-hit performance against Luverne.

Allison Moeller went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles for Fairmont, Micaela Gochanour was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and reached twice via being hit by a pitch, while Lardy went 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Mikayla Krzywicki allowed one unearned run on one hit and walked one in three innings of relief to earn the Game 1 victory for Fairmont.

Brittany Evans went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and one RBI to propel Pipestone Area to an 8-3 second-round triumph over Fairmont.

Shelby Bloemendaal gave up three runs on nine hits, struck out seven and walked one in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory for Pipestone.

Kristen Campe went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and three RBIs to top Fairmont.

Guetter went 2-for-3, Abby Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Gochanour chipped in a hit and a run.

Section 2A Playoffs

Martin County West 10, United South Central 0 – The No. 2-seeded Mavericks shut out the No. 7-seeded Rebels 10-0 in five innings during Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal action on Tuesday at Fox Lake Area Sports Complex in Welcome.

The Mavericks (14-3) host No. 3 seed St. Clair (9-3) at 5 p.m. Thursday in Welcome.

Rebecca Steen pitched five innings of one-hit softball, striking out eight and walking five to notch the victory for MCW.

Kate Thiesse smacked three hits to generate four RBIs, while Shawna Dressen recorded two hits, including a double, for the Mavericks.

Ellie Kuehl drove in one RBI on two hits, while Steen helped her own cause with an RBI single.

Lilly Gonsalez recorded the Rebels’ lone hit of the game.

Taylor Schultz pitched all five innings, striking out four and walking one, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits to absorb the loss.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 7, Madelia/Truman 0 – The No. 4-seeded Knights blanked the No. 5-seeded Jayhawks 7-0 during Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal action on Tuesday at Lake Crystal.

LCWM (9-8) faces No. 1-seeded Mankato Loyola (17-0) at 5 p.m. Thurday in Mankato.

Madelia/Truman ended its season with a 4-14 overall record.

Sami Sorenson pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits, striking out nine and walking two to net the win for the Knights.

Stephanie Jahnz, Brianna Stevensen and Sam Groskreutz each recorded hits for the Jayhawks.

Beth Kotewa pitched all six innings for the Jayhawks, giving up seven runs – two earned – on four hits, striking out four and walking four in taking the loss.
