Webers steer MCW to Valley titles

MADELIA – The Weber family powered the Martin County West Mavericks’ sweep of both Valley Conference boys and girls golf championships on Tuesday at Madelia Golf Course.

Perennial state qualifier Cordell Weber earned meet medalist honors by firing an even-par 72, while seventh-grade sibling Dawson Weber carded an 80 to share third place overall to help the Mavericks defend their league championship by fending off Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, 322-330.

But the Weber family’s impact in the fairways did not stop in the boys division as sophomore Logan Weber carded a meet-medalist round of 81 to steer the Mavericks’ four-player girls lineup to a conference-winning total of 424 – four shots better than runner-up Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.

“Webers save the day for Martin County West,” chanted smiling Maverick junior Connor Anderson, who contributed a seventh-place round of 84 to the blue-and-black roster’s winning ways.

Jacob Buntjer fired an 86 to capture eighth place overall to join MCW teammates Cordell Weber, Dawson Weber and Anderson as all-conference golfers for their low-scoring ways on the day. Hunter Olson chipped in a 96 to net honorable mention accolades for the Mavericks, while Chris Kahler broke the century mark by shooting a 99.

Ironically, Cordell Weber, a senior, and younger brother Dawson Weber, each penciled in 11 pars during 18-hole action. Cordell Weber, however, produced three red numbers – under par scores – by connecting for birdies on the sixth and 18th holes, while draining a 25-foot putt for an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole.

Coincidentally, No. 9 proved to the liking of Logan Weber, too. The Maverick sophomore produced eight pars during her 18-hole round and added a birdie on the final hole before the midway turn.

Jennifer Petersen fired a 102 to capture sixth place overall, while teammate Morgan Larson delivered a 105 to net seventh to earn all-conference accolades for the Mavericks. Taylor DeVary shot a 136 to round out MCW’s winning team performance.

On the boys’ side, Logan Pytleski generated an 18-hole round of 88 to pocket 10th place overall to collect all-conference honors to pace Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain’s fifth-place team total of 385.

Michael Dallager generated a 92 to claim honorable mention accolades for the Bluejays, while Anthony True (102) and Jackson Maloney (103) completed Truman/GHEC’s counting marks. Tyler Mathiason shot a 107, while Chris Crissinger chipped in a 119 for the Bluejays.

Martin County West and Truman/ Granada-Huntley-East Chain compete in the Section 2A, South Sub-Section Meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Rose Lake Golf Course in Fairmont.
