No. 5 Fairmont homers to win over LCWM
LAKE CRYSTAL – Jay Ruen delivered a pair of pivotal extra-base hits, Luke Becker collected four hits and Ben Abel homered to power the Class AA, No. 5-ranked Fairmont Cardinals to an 11-4 comeback baseball victory over the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights on Friday in Lake Crystal.
Trailing 3-1, Ruen connected on a two-run double during the top of the third inning to draw the Cardinals even on the scoreboard.
Ruen then slugged a two-run home run during the fourth frame to extend Fairmont’s margin to 6-4. Ruen went 2-for-4 with a game-leading four RBIs.
Becker continued his torrid hitting ways by going 4-for-4 at the plate, including a double, to drive in one run. Becker also crossed the plate three times on the non-league game.
Abel smacked a two-run homer for the Cardinals in the fifth inning en route to three RBIs on the game.
Spencer Chirpich, Jack Waletich, Tyler Tennyson, Nathan Gillis, Parker Monsen and Cole Emler each supplied a hit, with Emler doubling, to round out Fairmont’s 13-hit performance.
Emler also notched the victory by pitching four scoreless innings of relief. The right-hander gave up three hits, while striking out one and walking two.
Matt Lytle started on the mound, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits, walked two, fanned one and hit one batter to receive no decision for the Cardinals.
LCWM starting pitcher Mark Jacobs gave up five runs – four earned – on six hits, walked two and struck out one in three innings to take the loss.
Zak Anderson allowed six earned runs on seven hits, issued four walks and struck out three in four frames of relief.
Fairmont (15-1, 6-1 South Central) travels to St. Peter on Monday for a 4 p.m. conference game.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial edged Fairmont in junior varsity action, 6-5, Friday in Lake Crystal.
Clayton Maakestad collected two hits and one RBI to top the Cardinals, while teammates Eli Green, Evan Closs, Nate Johnson and Ryan Brooks each supplied one hit and one RBI.
Johnson allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits, struck out two and walked three in six innings of work to take the loss.
Matt Larson, Cory Lyons and Caleb Lloyd each produced three hits to power Fairmont to a 13-3 victory over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial during C-squad action Friday in Lake Crystal.
Leyton Becker and Carter Lloyd each generated two hits for the Cardinals, while Christian Engeman, Cody Freese, Michael Soucek and Dylan Gerken each chipped in one hit.
Justin Schwieger struck out two in three innings pitched for Fairmont (6-5), while Freese fanned five in three innings of relief. Becker closed out the final three frames on the hill.
St. James 4, Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman 2 – Bransen Petersen slugged the game-winning two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Saints to a 4-2 nonconference win over the Knights on Friday in St. James.
Petersen collected two of St. James’ seven hits on the game, while Ryan Menssen delivered an RBI double.
Ethan Hurn generated an RBI single for the Knights, Josh Wolter singled and scored a run, while Tyler Wiederhoeft chipped in a double.
Menssen, who gave up one hit and issued one walk in getting the final two outs of the top of the seventh, notched the pitching victory for the Saints.
Justin Stevens started on the hill for St. James, allowing two runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings. Stevens struck out five, walked four and hit one batter in receiving no decision.
Wolter allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out four and did not issue a walk in 6 1/3 innings of work to take the loss for the Knights.

Kaylen Legred added an RBI double for BEA.
New Ulm right-hander Tyler Dittrich allowed four runs on nine hits, struck out four and walked two in five innings pitched to earn the complete-game victory.
New Ulm (14-3, 7-1 SCC) hosts St. Peter at 2 p.m. today at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

Seth Anderson and Quinn Huisman each went 2-for-3 for BEA, with Anderson scoring two runs and Huisman collecting one RBI.
