Zane E. Fitz

FAIRMONT – Memorial services for Zane E. Fitz, 89, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at United Methodist Church in Fairmont. Burial with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and the Martin County VFW Post #1222 will be held in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.

Zane passed away Thursday morning, May 8, 2014, at the United Hospital District in Blue Earth, Minn. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont.

Lakeview Funeral home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of the arrangements.

Zane Earl Fitz was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Fairmont, Minn., to Howard K. and Hazel (LaRow) Fitz. He attended school in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School in May 1942. He was employed by JCPenney, Larry’s Cash Produce, Musser and Company, Jeck Packing Company and Fairmont Railway Motors/Harsco, where he worked for 37 years, the last 18 years as manager of the Production Control Department. Zane volunteered four times to serve his country but was rejected and put in 4-F. He later, with the help of Alan Moore, challenged the work or fight bill and was accepted for service duty. Zane served as a Teletype Operator in the 304th Signal Operations Bn. in the U.S. Army Signal Corp in Yokohama, Japan. He received his honorable discharge on Nov. 23, 1946. On June 9, 1947, Zane was united in marriage to Marjorie C. Koons in Fairmont, Minn. Two children were born of this union, Barbara Jo and Edward Richard.

Zane was a member of the Fairmont Clown Club, a member of the Martin County Historical Society, where he served two terms as Treasurer, was city co-chair with Don Harder on the Martin County Blood Drive, and through the years donated 13 gallons of blood. Zane loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved playing cards, traveled extensively throughout the years and enjoyed taking photographs. Zane was an avid reader and had many favorite authors. Faith was an important part of Zane’s life and he was a longtime member of the Fairmont United Methodist Church where he held many offices there.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marjorie Fitz of Fairmont, Minn.; daughter, Barbara Fitz, of Blue Earth, Minn.; son, Edward (Suzann) Fitz of Benson, Minn.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Bettye Watson of Columbia Falls, Mont., Finnette (Al) Walker of Roscoe, Ill., and Doris Shennum of Ellensburg, Wash.; brother, David Fitz of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Koons) Altman of Welcome, Minn., and Rita Fitz of Fairmont, Minn.; a special foster child, Julie Bruner of Sherburn, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

Zane was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Hazel Fitz; step-mother, Anne Fitz; brother, Owen Fitz; sisters-in-law, Maxine Conklin, Hazel Wieland, and Mildred Turner; brothers-in-law, Robert Conklin, William Koons, Kenneth Turner, Gilbert Wieland, Harry Shennum and Jotham Watson.
