Mavericks breeze past Mustangs
SHERBURN – Martin County West’s school colors are be black and blue, but Cordell Weber was seeing red on Monday at Fox Lake Golf Course in Sherburn.
The MCW senior carded three birdies in his 9-hole round on the way to a 1-under 34 to pace the Mavericks to a 156-210 Valley Conference victory over the Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Mustangs.
“I have always told Cordell just go red,” Martin County West head coach Jeff Ross said in reference to scores under par. “Each player on our team has their job, and we need him to go red.”
Weber started out the meet with a bogey on the opening hole, but bounced right back with two birdies.
On the par-5 No. 2, Weber’s second shot put him right next to a tree just off the front of the green.
Weber nearly sank the chip shot, but read the putt and finished the hole with a birdie.
Weber then drove right next to the green on No. 3, and used two more shots to find the cup, carding a 3 on the par 4.
With three straight pars and a bogey, Weber maintained his red scoring round, carding a 3 on the par-4 No. 8.
“Cordell was in the red on Saturday right up to the last hole or two, but today he did exactly what we needed him to do,” said Ross. “The other golfers on the team also did what they needed to do. Every day of golf can be different, but today was a good day.”
Connor Anderson scored one birdie – on No. 2 – chipping onto the green and sinking the putt for a 4 on the par-5 hole.
After a bogey on the third hole, Anderson responded with two straight birdies and closed out his nine-hole round of 41 with back-to-back pars.
“We would take scores like we got today at almost any meet,” said Ross. ” (A) 156 is our season low for a team score, and if we could get high 30s and low 40s from three of our top four that would be great.”
Jake Buntjer didn’t card a birdie in his round, but managed a 39 to help Martin County West in the win.
Chris Kahler scored a birdie on the par-4 No. 3 on his way to a 42 to complete the Mavericks’ team score.
“Today was a perfect day for golf, beautiful weather and we’ve played a bunch of matches after getting some rainouts,” said Ross. “That’s really helping our guys get better, just getting out there in some good weather and playing.”
Hunter Schofield scored a 45, while Hunter Olson finished with a 50 to round out the Mavericks’ efforts.
Michael Dallager topped the Mustangs in the meet, carding one par on the par-3 No. 5 on his way to scoring a 48, while Anthony True came into the clubhouse with one par on the par-4 No. 6 and a round of 52.
Jackson Maloney carded two pars for a 54 and Logan Pytleski finished with one par and a round of 56 to complete the Mustangs’ team score.
Tyler Mathiason finished with a 57 and Chris Crissinger scored a 77 to round out the Mustangs’ effort.
