Becker’s cycle lifts Cards to wins
WINDOM – Fairmont’s Luke Becker is seeing the baseball well, and he’s hitting it even better.
Becker went 8-for-10 from the batter’s box, including hitting for the rare cycle during his 6-for-6 performance in Game 2, with six RBIs to power the Class AA, No. 8-ranked Fairmont Cardinals to back-to-back victories in the Windom Invitational on Saturday.
Matt Lytle hurled a six-hit complete-game gem, while Becker drove in two RBIs with a pair of doubles in four at-bats to pace Fairmont’s 5-0 opening win over host Windom.
Lytle displayed stellar control by recording five strikeouts without issuing a walk in seven shutout innings to earn the complete-game victory.
Ben Abel went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Cardinals, while Spencer Chirpich, Tyler Tennyson, Nathan Gillis and Cole Emler each chipped in hits.
Becker then unleashed six of the Cardinals’ 22 hits to pace a 20-7 triumph over Adrian during Game 2 in Windom.
Becker smacked a double, a pair of triples and two singles to complement his fifth home run of the season to produce four RBIs and scored three runs.
Chirpich went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored for Fairmont, while Jay Ruen went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles en route to three RBIs and two runs scored.
Emler collected two hits, including a triple, to generate three RBIs, while Tennyson supplied two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Emler allowed one hit in three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Emler struck out two and walked one.
Fairmont (10-1, 3-1) travels to Johnson Park in New Ulm today to face the Class AA, No. 6-ranked Eagles in a 4 p.m. game.

The Blue Earth Area Bucs baseball team split games on Saturday at the Windom Invitational.
The Bucs scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Adrian Dragons 5-2 in the opening round, before losing 9-3 to the host Windom Eagles in Game 2.
Quinn Huisman pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two runs – one earned – on six hits, striking out one and walking seven to take the opening round victory for the Bucs.
Alex Stewart pitched the final 2/3 innings to earn the save in the game.
Huisman also helped his own cause, going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Luke Schavey, David Franta, Alec Huber and Seth Anderson each went 1-for-3 in the game, with Schavey smacking a double.
Franta and Huber each drove in an RBI, while Anderson scored and drove in an RBI.
Stewart went 2-for-3 from the plate, scoring one run for the Bucs, while Alan Davids blasted an RBI triple in the game.
Davids then turned around and pitched his first career varsity game against the host Eagles.
The sophomore pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs – four earned – on 11 hits, striking out six and walking two to take the loss.
Davids went 3-for-4 from the dish, nearly hitting the cycle with a triple, double and a single in the game.
Schavey went 2-for-4 from the plate, driving in an RBI, while Franta smacked a double.
Blue Earth Area (4-5, 0-3 SCC) travels to play a South Central Conference game at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in St. Peter.
