MCW converts relays into title

FAIRMONT – Junior standout Taryn Tumbleson swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles to help power the Martin County West Mavericks girls track and field team to the Sentinel Relays’ Class A championship on Friday night at Cardinal Track.

Tumbleson produced two of the Mavericks’ six gold-medal performances to outdistance runner-up Mountain Lake Area, 154-135, in the 32-team meet’s first running since 2011.

Martin County West stormed out of the starting blocks as the quartet of Brooke Anderson, Sara Carlson, Whitney Smith and Morgan Larson blistered the tarred surface for a winning time of 10:10.15 in the competition’s opening event – the 4×800-meter relay.

Smith, who was battling a cold, persevered to give the Mavericks the lead during the third leg before Larson shifted into fifth gear to literally run away with the gold medal.

“I might just have to run the 3,200 later with a box of Kleenex if I don’t feel any better later,” Smith joked.

Tumbleson then outdueled North Union’s Sarah Rolling for top honors in the high hurdles, crossing the finish line in 16.28 seconds. Rolling pocketed the silver medal with a time of 17.69.

Despite battling an injury, perennial state qualifier Haley Jensen sprinted to gold in the open 100 meters by besting North Union’s MaKayla Hartman, 12.81-13.12, to give the Mavericks three consecutive victories to open the Class A competition.

“I’ve had trouble with my calf, so my physical therapist recommended using kinesio tape on it,” Jensen said in reference to the ebony therapeutic strips on the back of her legs.

The kinesio tape worked its magic again as the fleet-footed Jensen anchored Martin County West’s first-place showing of 1:54.99 in the 4×200. Maggie Bachenberg, Abby Bachenberg and Cora Olson combined handoffs with Jensen to strike gold in the relay.

Tumbleson then doubled her individual gold medals by edging Fairmont junior varsity hurdler Lizzy Subbert for top honors in the 300-meter hurdles in a photo finish, 51.2-51.25.

“I have to give credit to (teammate) Dan Sparks for that win. He taught me how to three-step it,” Tumbleson said in reference to her precision footwork.

Hailey Leiding then soared past the entire field of Class A long jumpers, spraying the sand at a distance of 15 feet, 6 1/4 inches to earn gold for the Mavericks.

“That’s a PB (personal best) for me,” said Leiding.

“Beating my mom’s record is my motivation in the long jump every meet, and I’m starting to get there,” Leiding said with a smile in reference to matching former MCW standout and mother Sara Jones’ winning form in the field event.

Sara Carlson and Whitney Smith – with tissue in tow – delivered a 2-3 showing for the Mavericks in the 2-mile run with respective times of 12:26.68 and 12:39.46.

Morgan Larson then produced gap-reducing anchor legs on both the Mavericks’ medley and 4×400 relays to pace silver-medal efforts.

Morgan Lange, Maggie Bachenberg, Cora Olson and Larson posted a time of 4:36.94 in the medley, while Larson capped off MCW’s quartet of Brooke Anderson, Tumbleson and Whitney Smith in placing second in the 4×400 in 4:21.94.

Elizabeth Anthonisen cleared 29-11 1/2 to claim second place in the triple jump to round out MCW’s top-two showings.

Lydia Hildebrandt proved a double-winner for Mountain Lake Area by capturing the open 200 in 27.91 on the heels of striking gold in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.59.

St. Clair thrower Katelyn Weber also generated a pair of first-place performances by winning the shot (43-0 1/2) and discus (126-0). Weber is the defending Class A state champion in the shot and state runner-up in the discus.

Fairmont’s Lizzy Subbert cleared 4-9 to fend off North Union’s Sarah Rolling (4-6) for top honors in the high jump, while MaKayla Hartman, Elizabeth Boyer, Alexis Valvick and Olivia Marlow traded handoffs to pocket gold in the 4×100 in 54.67.

Martin County West competes in the True Team Section 2A Meet on Tuesday in Mapleton.
