ROCHESTER – LaRayne Schrooten, 94, of Rochester, formerly of Fairmont, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Hospital-St. Marys.
LaRayne was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Sheldon, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Dora (Moltzen) Trees. Her early years were spent in north-central Iowa and south-central Minnesota. She graduated from Britt High School in 1938. She was offered a four-year scholarship in voice from the Conservatory of Music in Chicago but did not pursue it. LaRayne worked as a secretary throughout her career, serving in law offices, banks, schools and churches in Minnesota, Arizona and California. She served the organization of business professionals at SCORE in Rochester until her retirement at the age of 85. LaRayne touched the hearts of many people over the years with her music. At the piano, at the organ, in supper clubs, in sanctuaries, she could make you smile, and she could make you cry. What mattered most to LaRayne was her faith, her family and her friends. She inspired many with her love of life, her sense of humor and her ability to smile through adversity.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Ralph and Don Trees; her sister, Maxine (Trees) Greenwald; two husbands; a daughter; and a grandson.
She is survived by six children, Don Nelson of Claypool, Ariz., Craig Nelson, of Fairmont, David Schrooten, of Rochester, Paul Schrooten, of Anchorage, Alaska, Ann Schrooten, of St. Paul, and Mark Schrooten, of Chandler, Ariz. Also surviving are her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at Rochester Assembly of God Church. A graveside ceremony will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Lincoln Township Cemetery near Dolliver, Iowa, followed by a noon reception/reunion at Fairmont’s 1st Congregational UCC in the Heritage Hall.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Salvation Army.
