Knights lose pair of close tourney games

AUSTIN – The Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Knights baseball team lost a pair of close games during the Lyle/Pacelli tournament Saturday in Austin.

A.J. Chappius delivered a bases-loaded triple as Medford scratched out six sixth-inning runs to edge the Knights in the opener, 11-9.

Chappius also doubled en route to four RBIs, Nick VonRuden produced a two-run double, while Tyler Keller added a two-run single for Medford.

Aaron Snyder allowed one run on three hits and walked two in four innings of relief to earn the win.

Josh Wolter went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to top the Knights’ seven-hit effort, while Zach Wolter went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Sam Geistfeld went 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored for ML/GHEC/Truman, while teammates Tyler Wiederhoeft and Garrett Balcom each added a hit and scored twice.

Lukas Anderson doubled, singled and had two RBIs to help steer the Southland Rebels to a 12-7 victory over the Knights in Game 2 in Austin.

Taylor Schwartz, Trent Reinartz and Paxton Gray each produced two hits for Southland. Schwartz crossed the plate three times, while Reinartz and Gray each tallied two runs.

Rebel starting pitcher Jordan Heimer allowed seven runs on seven hits, struck out 11 and walked five in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory.

Josh Wolter plated two runs with a hit to top the Knights in Game 2, while Derek Shoen collected two hits and one RBI.

Zach Wolter supplied a hit, one RBI and scored one run, while Geistfeld doubled, walked twice and scored three times.

Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman (1-5, 1-1 Valley) hosts Round Lake-Brewster today in Northrop.

Prep Softball

Alden-Conger 7, Madelia/Truman 6 – The Knights plated an unearned run with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Jayhawks during Valley Conference action Friday in Alden.

Cassie Gilster and Brooke Reyerson each went 3-for-4 and scored two runs to top A-C’s nine-hit effort. Gilster, who doubled and tripled, also drove in two runs.

Savannah Hodge went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored to pace the Jayhawks, while Briannia Pearson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Ciera Drevlow, Sierra McCraw, Stephanie Jahnz, Brianna Stevensen and Melody Colon each added a hit for M/T, while Stevensen scoring a run.

Jayhawk starter Beth Kotewa allowed seven runs – only three earned – on nine hits, struck out four and walked three in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Jessica Price gave up six runs – zero earned – on eight hits, fanned four and walked four in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory for the Knights.

Madelia/Truman (3-4) hosts Mankato Loyola on Tuesday in Madelia.
