Fairmont takes twinbill from JCC

JACKSON – Luke Becker hammered a pair of home runs to guide the Class AA, No. 10-ranked Fairmont Cardinals to a baseball doubleheader sweep over the Jackson County Central Huskies on Friday at Wacker Field in Jackson.

The switch-hitting Becker cranked a solo round-tripper during the top of the seventh inning in the Cardinals’ 14-3 opening triumph over the Huskies.

Luke Becker, who will join brother Levi Becker on the diamond for North Iowa Area Community College next season, then delivered a pivotal two-run home run in the sixth inning of Fairmont’s 11-6 Game 2 win.

With the game tied at 3-all, Becker cleared the outfield fence with a clout with two outs to stake the red-and-white to the upperhand on the scoreboard.

Becker went 2-for-5 with two RBIs in Game 2, while teammate Jack Waletich went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Waletich supplied a key RBI double during Fairmont’s two-run fifth at-bat.

Ben Abel went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals in the nightcap, while Tyler Tennyson, Nathan Gillis and Parker Monsen each collected hits.

Becker also notched the pitching victory by working three scoreless innings of relief. The senior right-hander allowed two hits, struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Matt Lytle started on the mound for Fairmont, allowing three earned runs on five hits to receive no decision. Lytle struck out three and walked one.

In Game 1, Jay Ruen went 3-for-5 to top the Cardinals’ 10-hit offensive attack. Ruen scored twice and drove in one run.

Becker went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Monsen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and crossed the plate twice.

Clayton Maakestad allowed two earned runs on five hits, struck out five and walked two in five innings of work to earn the victory for Fairmont.

Cole Emler gave up one run – none earned – on one hit, struck out two and did not issue a walk in two innings of relief.

Fairmont (6-1) plays host to Class AA, No. 5-ranked Luverne at 5 p.m. Monday.

Jackson County Central downed Fairmont, 17-9, during junior varsity action on Friday.

Eli Green, Ryan Brooks, Nate Johnson and Mark Washa each collected one hit and one RBI for the Cardinals (3-3).

Fairmont outslugged JCC, 10-8, during C-squad action Friday.

Matt Larson and Cody Freese each produced three hits to top the Cardinals’ effort. Larson doubled and tripled, while Freese doubled twice.

Dylan Gerken singled and doubled for Fairmont (3-1), while Leyton Becker and Justin Schwieger each chipped in a hit.
