Fairmont tracksters sweep triad

JACKSON – Twelve days after the Fairmont girls and boys track and field teams swept the Blue Earth Area Invite, the Cardinals were able to take home another pair of first-place team finishes.

This time, traveling west on Interstate 90, the Cardinals held off Martin County West and Jackson County Central for top honors.

The Maverick girls finished second to the Cardinals’ winning total of 103 with 53 points, while the Huskies finished third with 30.

The Cardinal boys topped the competition with 95 points, while the Huskies finished second (60) and the Mavericks were third (31).

Sierra Schultz had another day of multiple first-place finishes, winning both horizontal jumps and the 100-meter hurdles, in addition to a third-place finish to pace the girls 103 winning point total.

MaKenzie Bliesmer, Brooklyn Leichtnam, Sasha Riley, Haley Harder, Molly Hawkins and Jenna Pavich also joined Schultz in earning top honors both on and off the track.

Schultz opened the triangular with a first-place time in the 100 hurdles, racing in at 15.68 seconds, just ahead of Harder(16.53), who finished second.

Schultz then moved to the infield of the track, claiming a first-place jump of 15 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump, before winning the triple jump in 33-10.

The Cardinals swept the top three places in the triple jump, with Marissa Voss and Morgan Seifried earning second and third in 29-2 and 28-8, respectively.

Schultz’s third-place finish came at the hands of her teammates Bliesmer and Lizzy Subbert in the high jump.

With the three Fairmont jumpers left after clearing 4-8, both Bliesmer and Subbert cleared 4-9, while Schultz missed on her three attempts to finish third.

Bliesmer and Subbert each attempted to clear 4-10, but both were unable to clear it, giving Bliesmer first place with fewer misses, making Subbert second with her personal-best jump.

Leichtnam and Andrea Thate combined for a 1-2 finish in the pole vault. The Fairmont senior vaulted a winning height of 7-6, while Thate finished second after vaulting 7 feet even.

Leichtnam also contributed to Fairmont’s winning 4×200 relay. She passed the baton along with teammates Larissa Becker, Briana Gratz and Voss for a winning time of 1:58.25.
