Russell A. Bankson

FAIRMONT – Russell Arvid Bankson, 88, of Fairmont, formerly of Brooklyn Center, Minn., went home to his Lord on Monday, April 14, 2014.

Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Brookdale Covenant Church in Brooklyn Center. A private burial service with military honors will be held in Fort Snelling.

Russ was born in 1926 in Sioux City, Iowa, the first of three sons born to Abel and Melita Bankson. He served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then attended North Park College in Chicago. On April 12, 1952, he married Eleanor Olson. They were blessed with a daughter and three sons. Russ worked in sales for Durkee Foods and later owned an insurance agency in Minneapolis. Russ loved his church, where he served as chairman and in other leadership roles. As a member of the American Swedish Institute, he led the Varmland Committee. He enjoyed traveling – especially to Sweden.

He is survived by his brothers, Les (Joyce) of Edina, and Ben of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his children, Betsy (Dick) of Worcester, Mass., Tim (Joanie) of Chelan, Wash., Dan (Cindy) of Fairmont, and John (Jean) of Duluth, Minn.; his grandchildren, Anna, Ben, Jonathan, Sakeus, Jacob, Leah, Natin, Sarah, and Erin.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Eleanor.
