Fairmont pockets split decision

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont boys track and field team netted nine first-place finishes on the way to earning a 73.5-72.5 dual meet victory over the Luverne Cardinals on Tueday at Cardinal Track in Fairmont.

Luverne claimed a split in the meet though, with its girls team winning 75-71 over Fairmont.

“Year in and year out, it seems like Luverne is always a solid team,” said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk. “I think that they both went to the True Team state meet last year and so we thought they’d be tough.”

While the Luverne girls team scored a critical nine points in the 3,200 to capture the meet victory, the Fairmont boys took nine points in the triple jump on the way to clinching their win.

Josh Eversman, Zach Brown and Evan Ward swept the top-three finishes in the triple jump for a big nine-point swing late in the meet.

Eversman jumped 40 feet, 11 inches for first-place honors, while Brown and Ward finished second and third with jumps of 39-3 and 39-2.5, respectively.

Eversman then captured his other first-place finish of the meet, sweeping the horizontal jumps with a leap of 19-9 in the triple jump.

Brown also found his way to a first-place finish in the 400, topping the field with a winning time of 54.77 seconds.

Thomas Willett added extra scoring power for Fairmont, finishing second in the sprint with a time of 55.20.

Ward, like his jumping counterparts, also took home two individual firsts, in addition to helping Fairmont win the 4×400 relay victory to clinch the meet.

Ward and Kolin Kelly combined for first- and second-place finishes in the high hurdles. Ward finished in 16.41, while Kelly took second in 18.02.

Ward then capped the hurdles sweep by taking the 300-meter race with a time of 42.47.

Ward then held off the Luverne 4×400 anchor leg in the final 100 yards for a .42-second victory in the final race of the meet.

Brown gave Fairmont the early lead, before Nate Subbert and Levi Bulfer kept the lead intact, before handing it off to Ward, who crossed the line in 3:42.55.

Peter Erickson gave Fairmont another close relay victory in the 4×100, passing the Luverne anchor leg in the final 100 meters.

Derek Edman, Bulfer and Brian Wilde blistered the track and stayed within striking distance in the opening three legs of the race, before Erickson slammed the door on Luverne for the winning time of 48.14.

Subbert and Erickson also combined for a 1-2 finish in the high jump, going 5-4 and 5-2, respectively.

Zac Ehlert earned the other victory for Fairmont in the 3,200-meter run. Ehlert won by .42 seconds, crossing the line in 11:05.99.

“For the boys, there were a lot of big moments that happened throughout the meet,” said Bonk. “Winning the 4×400 was huge, because that was a five-point swing, and the 4×100 relay win and Zac’s great finish in the 2-mile. All of those were huge points for us and when you only win by one, that is a big factor.”

The Fairmont girls team swept two separate events during the dual meet.

Sierra Schultz, Haley Harder and Brooklyn Leichtnam combined to sweep the 100-meter hurdles.

Schultz won the race in 16.72 seconds, while Harder and Leichtnam finished second and third in 17.19 and 17.48, respectively.

Harder then captured the 300-meter low hurdles with a time of 50.60, while Schultz won the triple jump with a leap of 33-6.5.

Fairmont’s long-distance runners then swept the 1,600-meter run. Iliana Ramon raced to a first-place time of 5:55.03, while Emily Haugen and Bethany Linse finished second and third for Fairmont. Haugen crossed the line in 6:07.71, while Linse finished in 6:35.58.

“For the girls today, I thought that sweeping two events was great, especially for the mile girls and Iliana going under 6 minutes,” said Bonk. “I think if you compare today’s times and numbers to last week or Saturday, the weather played a big factor today. But it’s our third meet in six days, so we’ll just look to the next meet.”

Jenna Pavich and Katiana Fischer teamed for a 1-2 finish in the 800, racing to times of 2:35.34 and 2:43.99, respectively.

Sasha Riley cruised to a win in the 400 in 1:03.69, before helping the 4×400 relay to a victory. Riley teamed with Pavich, Harder and Sarah Ostlie for a winning time of 4:26.43.

Carsen Wetzel and Lizzy Subbert claimed first and second in the high jump, respectively.

Fairmont competes in a triangular against Worthington and St. James next Tuesday in Worthington.
