Austin netters trip Fairmont in opener
AUSTIN – The Austin Packers boys tennis team battled through the bitter cold to post a 5-2 nonconference victory over the Fairmont Cardinals on Monday in Austin.
The Packers swept the doubles bracket, winning all three matches in straight sets.
Carter Steichen and Levi Vierkandt teamed for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Carter Klanderud and Jake Kallenbach at No. 1 doubles.
Owen Nelson and Ethan Anderson combined to defeat Ryan Busche and Mitch Anderton at second doubles, 7-5, 6-3.
The Packers then completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 win courtesy of Clyde Carver and Sawyer Meyers defeating Calvin King and Andy Hagen at third doubles.
Manuel Martinez and Tyler Head provided during the Cardinals’ season-opener, winning the second and third singles matches.
Martinez outlasted Jeremy Olmsted in a tiebreaker to win the first set. After battling to a 6-6 tie, the pair played out the deciding game, with the Cardinals’ No. 2 singles player coming away with the 7-2 decision.
Martinez used that winning momentum to capture the match, beating Olmsted in the second set, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Head needed a super tiebreaker in place of a third full set to beat Austin’s Seth Hebrink at third singles.
Hebrink took the opening set with a 6-3 win, before Head bounced back to return the favor with a 6-2 victory in the second segment.
With the cold weather playing a factor, the coaches settled on the tiebreaker for the third set and Head managed to seal the win with a 10-7 decision.
Colten Detwiler took No. 1 singles for the Packers, blanking Sterlin Johnson in back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 sets.
Jens Ourada sealed the meet victory for Austin with a third-set super tiebreaker win over Austin Becker at No. 4 singles.
Ourada won the opening set 6-3, before Becker bounced back to win the second set, 6-3.
Like their teammates in the third singles match, the No. 4 singles players used a super tiebreaker to decide the outcome of the match.
Ourada outlasted Becker and took the 10-6 win to claim the match.
Fairmont (0-1) plays host to St. Peter at 4:30 p.m. today at Cardinal Courts in Fairmont.
