Dennis R. Laffey

FAIRMONT – A funeral service for Dennis R. Laffey, 79, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont with interment following in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont. Military honors will be provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222.

Dennis passed away on Thursday evening, April 10, 2014, in the Lutz Wing of the Mayo Clinic Health System, Fairmont. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the Lakeview Funeral Home.

Dennis Romaine Laffey was born April 15, 1934, in Armstrong, Iowa, the son of Linus and Florence (Danielson) Laffey. He was baptized at his parent’s home on Dec. 10, 1939, and later was confirmed with his mother in 1955, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Dennis attended Armstrong public schools until the eighth grade. On Feb. 21, 1952, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served during the Korean Conflict on the anti-aircraft cruiser USS Juneau CLAA 119. Dennis achieved the rank of Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class. He entered into inactive reserve on April 15, 1955, until earning an honorable discharge in 1960. Dennis was a very proud Navy veteran.

On Feb. 12, 1956, Dennis was united in marriage to Marie Swanson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont. This union was blessed with five children. The couple resided in Fairmont where Dennis worked at Northland Beverage for 26 years. He most recently worked for Tyco Plastics for nine years until his retirement on May 17, 1996. Dennis and Marie shared 58 years together. He enjoyed family camping trips and winters in Arizona. Dennis especially loved any time he was able to spend with his family. Dennis was a life-member of Martin County VFW Post 1222, Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Disabled American Veterans.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marie Laffey of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Randy Laffey (LuAnn Golen) of Coon Rapids, Minn., Cynthia (Hans) Hinrichsen of Fairmont, Minn., Barbara (Jay) Byers of Fairmont, Minn., Diane Herbeck of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Kristen Hans of Ramsey, Minn.; grandchildren, Jessi (Matt) Carlson, Jamee Hinrichsen (Justin Larson), Joshua (Kari) Hinrichsen, Benjamin Byers, Jordan Byers, Blake Knox, Blake Herbeck, Courtney Herbeck, Devan Herbeck, Colin Hans, and Dawson Hans; great-grandchildren, Grant Roesner, Mackenzie Carlson, Madison Carlson, McKayla Byers, Hailey Byers, Carter Byers, and Karson Knox; mother, Florence Lutz; half-brother, Jimmy Laffey of Wichita, Kan.; half-sister, Janet (Ben) Harris of San Diego, Calif.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Along with his grandparents, Emory and Bertha Danielson, Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Linus Laffey; grandson, Brandon Byers; half-brother, Danny Laffey; brothers-in-law, Gene Swanson, Ron Theisen, and Kerry Soncrant; other relatives and friends.
