New Ulm shuts out Fairmont; MCW belts Nicollet

NEW ULM – Starting pitcher Tori Botten, along with relievers Brittany Denn and Hannah Backer, combined to hurl a three-hit shutout as the New Ulm Eagles zipped the Fairmont Cardinals, 12-0, during a five-inning South Central Conference softball game on Thursday.

Botten recorded four strikeouts and issued one walk in three shutout innings of three-hit work to earn the victory for the two-time defending Class AA state champion Eagles.

Brittany Denn hurled a scoreless fourth frame, while Backer maintained the shutout with a scoreless fifth inning.

Botten assisted her own cause from the batter’s box, producing three RBIs behind a double and a single in three at-bats.

Abby Kamm also generated three RBIs behind a double and a single for New Ulm, while Briana Sieve and Kali Denn each collected two hits and two RBIs.

Abby Fitzgerald went 2-for-3 with a double to top the Cardinals, while Micaela Gochanour contributed a hit and a walk.

Fairmont starter Aly Eversman gave up nine runs – five earned – on 10 hits and walked two in three innings to take the loss. Mikayla Krzywicki allowed three runs on two hits in one inning of relief.

Fairmont (0-1, 0-1 SCC) faces Luverne at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Martin County West Invite in Welcome. New Ulm (2-0) plays host to St. Peter today.

Kaitlin Korn tripled for the Cardinals, Katelynn Noah delivered an RBI single, while Mallory Gochanour singled and scored the team’s only run.

Allison Johnston struck out three in four innings of work for Fairmont, while Jordan Ehlert hurled two innings of relief.

Fairmont (0-1) plays in the Martin County West Invite on Saturday in Welcome.

Martin County West 10, Nicollet 3 – Kate Thiesse went 4-for-4 and Jordan Gregory drove in four runs with two hits to power the Mavericks to a 10-3 Valley Conference victory over the Raiders on Thursday in Welcome.

Thiesse doubled, Gregory went 2-for-4 with a triple, while Molly Klima went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Shawna Dressen went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Martha Olson added an RBI single to MCW’s 16-hit offensive attack.

Starter Rebecca Steen gave up three runs on six hits in 6-plus innings of work to earn the win. Steen struck out 10 and walked two.

Sierra Williamson fanned one in working the seventh for MCW (2-0, 2-0 Valley), which plays Mt. Lake Area at 10 a.m. Saturday in the MCW Invite in Welcome.
