Cardinals 1st, 2nd at triangular

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont girls and boys track team finished first and second in nonconference triangular track and field action on Thursday at Cardinal Track in Fairmont.

The Cardinal girls squeezed past the Mankato East Cougars for an 82-79 edge, while the Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jayhawks finished third with 25 points.

On the boys’ side, the Cougars topped the field with 80 and the Cardinals and Jayhawks finished second and third with 67 and 28 points, respectively.

The long distance core for the Cardinals helped them clinch the close victory over the Cougars late in the meet.

Hannah Johnson won the 3,200-meter race with a time of 13:12.0, as the Cardinals grabbed three of the four top spots in the field.

Sarah Bartz raced to third with a time of 13:50, while Molly Hawkins crossed the line in 13:54 for fourth place for Fairmont.

“I thought that the 2-mile race really clinched the win for us in the meet,” said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk. “We were able to get three of the four top spots, and really held off Mankato East when we needed to for some important meet points.”

In addition to the success that the Cardinals had in the 2-mile race, they also swept first through third place in the 1,600.

Fairmont’s Iliana Ramon finished in 6:01.0 to win the mile race, with teammates Katiana Fischer and Emily Haugen finishing just seconds later for second and third place, respectively.

Fischer crossed the finish line in 6:03.6, while Haugen finished in 6:05.71 for Fairmont.

Sierra Schultz helped pace the winning Cardinals by earning three of the team’s eight first-place finishes.

The Fairmont junior standout scored honor-roll performances in the high hurdles (16.6) and triple jump (33-4.25) to top her finishes. She also finished first in the long jump, going 15 feet, 4.5 inches.

Haley Harder and Brooklyn Leichtnam combined with Schultz to help propel the Cardinals to the meet victory.

Leichtnam, Harder and Schultz swept the high hurdles, while Leichtnam and Harder added first-place finishes in other events.

“I thought that with a couple sweeps, the 100 hurdles, the 1,600 and a near sweep in the 300 hurdles, we had a great day overall,” said Bonk.

Harder finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.6 seconds, before topping the field with a time of 50.72 in the 300 hurdles later in the meet. Schultz garnered second-place honors with a time of 50.74 seconds in the race.

Leichtnam grabbed the top spot in the pole vault, going 8 feet after finishing third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.7 seconds.

Sasha Riley took home the final Fairmont first-place finish, winning the 200 with a time of 29.11, just ahead of the Jayhawks’ Amy Denn, who finished third in 30.08.

Briana Ardolf, Emily Zaharia, Elizabeth Cooling and Rachel Shumski passed the baton for the Jayhawks’ lone first-place finish of the meet in the opening race.

The four runners raced to a first-place time of 10:39.5 to win the 4×800 relay.

Shumski also finished third in the 800, running in with a time of 2:39.74, while the Cardinals’ Jenna Pavich finished second in 2:35.3.

Alissa Voyles threw the discus 95 feet to win second-place honors to help the Jayhawks in the field event success.

Kayley Shoen and Hannah Johanson finished second and third in the long jump for the Jayhawks, going 14-6.25 and 14-4.25, respectively.

Johanson also finished second in the triple jump by clearing 32-10.

Danielle Arndt took home second-place honors in the shot put, throwing for 29-3.

Evan Ward and Josh Eversman helped pace the Cardinals to their second-place finish by winning multiple individual first-place finishes, while Jake Wolter and Josh Johanson topped the Jayhawks’ efforts.

“What big days Evan and Josh had for us today,” said Bonk. “They had great performances in all their events and did a great job of leading the team.”

Ward swept the hurdle races, earning honor-roll times in both events and anchored the Cardinals winning 4×400 relay to close out the meet.

Ward and Kolin Kelly combined for a one-two finish in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 15.8 and 16.9 seconds, respectively.

Ward then won the 300 hurdle race with a time of 43.29.

With Mankato East’s 4×400 relay running even with the Cardinals as Ward got the handoff for the final leg of the relay, the junior held on to the inside lane and fended off the Cougars with a winning time of 3:41.1.

“That was a great final leg of the race for Evan. He had the Mankato East runner on the outside the entire oval, and wouldn’t let him get passed him at all,” said Bonk.

Eversman, meanwhile, showed his speed and jumping abilities in his events by earning three first-place finishes.

Eversman combined with Peter Erickson in the open 100 with finishes of 11.8 and 11.9 seconds, respectively, to start the meet.

Then the Cardinal senior won the triple and long jumps with an honor-roll leaps of 40-7.25 and 19-9.5, respectively.

Meanwhile for the Jayhawks, Wolter won both the 800 and 1,600-meter races.

Wolter raced to a time of 4:54.18 in the mile, just outpacing Fairmont’s Josh Sundblad’s time of 4:57.3 for first place.

The duo then battled in the 800, with Wolter again coming out on top with a time of 2:11.5, while Sundblad finished in 2:11.7.

Johanson, who helped the Jayhawks race to a second-place finish in the 4×200 relay, capped off his day with a personal-best and honor-roll leap of 6-6 to win the high jump.

Johanson traded the baton with Derrick VanHee, Jake Denn and Kyle Schultz for their second-place time of 1:39.2 in the relay, before battling with the Cardinals’ Erickson for the high-jump victory.

Erickson surpassed his personal-best jump and recorded an honor roll leap of 6 feet to finish second in the high jump.

Erickson also passed the baton with Derek Edman, Levi Bulfer and Brian Wilde for a second-place finish in the 4×100 relay, racing in with a time of 47.48.

VanHee, in addition to racing in the winning 4×200 relay, he also earned a second-place finish in the 400 with a time of 55.34 seconds.

Zac Ehlert grabbed a second-place finish for the Cardinals in the 3,200, crossing the finish line in 10:57.9.

The Fairmont boys and girls track and field travel to compete in the Blue Earth Area Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Field in Blue Earth.

Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther travels to compete in a Valley Conference dual meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Crystal.
