Alice M. Weig

FAIRMONT – Mass of Christian Burial for Alice M. Weig, 84, of Fairmont, formerly of Armstrong, Iowa, will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont, with Fr. Peter Schuster, Celebrant. A luncheon will follow the Mass in the fellowship hall at the church.

A private burial will be held at a later date in Armstrong Grove Cemetery, Armstrong, Iowa.

Alice passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 11, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Fairmont. Visitation will be two hours prior to services Friday at the church.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Alice Marian Schmidt was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Woden, Iowa, daughter of Paul and Lucille (Willett) Schmidt. She attended Woden school for three years, third grade through eighth grade in country school and graduated from Lone Rock High School in 1948. Alice was united in marriage to Lawrence G. “Bud” Weig Sr. on Nov. 7, 1953. To this union, four children were born. During the early years of their marriage, they lived in the Algona area until 1963, when they moved to Estherville, Iowa. In 1965, the family relocated to Armstrong, Iowa, where they lived for more than 20 years. They then moved to Fairmont in 1986, where she worked for United Foods. Bud passed away March 30, 1989. After Bud’s death, she moved back to Armstrong for a few years before resettling in Fairmont where she has remained. She became a resident of the Lutz Wing at Mayo Clinic Health System in July 2012 until her passing on March 11, 2014. Alice enjoyed reading, fishing, cooking, doing crossword puzzles and word search, her Minnesota Twins, and ’til the end she loved her BINGO, but she especially enjoyed time spent with family and friends. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Armstrong, VFW Auxiliary in Armstrong, and St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont.

Survivors include: her children, Lawrence G. “Larry” Weig Jr. of Fairmont, Vicki Weig of Fairmont, Susanne Hennager (Rick Heenan) of Fairmont, and Scott (Becky) Weig of Welcome; grandchildren, Michael, Joe, Sasha, Becky, Abby, and Ryan; step-grandchildren, Jason and Angela Watkins; great-grandchildren, Zach, Drayen, Kaisen; brother, August Schmidt of Algona; sisters, Cyrilla Marti of Algona and Verna Penning of Wesley; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Weig; infant son, David; father, Paul Schmidt; mother, Lucille Wessels; brothers, Ivan Schmidt, Paul and Virgil Schmidt; sisters, Margaret Baas, Nellie Phillips, and Rose Baas.
