Mary Ellen ‘Mert’ Yackle

ESTHERVILLE, Iowa – Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Ellen “Mert” Yackle, 83, of Estherville, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville with Monsignor Michael Sernett, Celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Armstrong, Iowa.

Mert departed this life on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with a vigil service planned for 8 p.m. Friday also at the funeral chapel.

Mary Ellen “Mert” (Kimmet) Yackle was born June 19, 1930, in Ringsted, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Petersen) Kimmet.

She received her education and graduated from Ringsted High School in 1947. On Sept. 15, 1947, she was united in marriage to Floyd Yackle at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Armstrong. Following their marriage the couple made their home on a farm near Ringsted until 1950 and then moved to Bancroft until 1966. The couple then farmed in the Dolliver area and in 1974 they moved near Estherville and continued farming. Mert was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for over 23 years retiring in 1992. In 2001, Mert and her son, Steve visited Scandinavia to visit Danish cousins. In 2002, She went to Italy to the Vatican City, Assisi, and Pompeii. Mert also visited New York City and her and Floyd made three trips to Hawaii. Mert and Floyd enjoyed winters in Florida, Arizona and Las Vegas and many visits to Indiana and Michigan to visit friends they met in Hawaii. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Genealogy Society, Good Samaritan Auxiliary, Dolliver Chatter Club, Pioneer Club, Danish American Fellowship, Red Hat’s Queen Mum, Galloping Grandma’s Relay for Life and Estherville Public Library. Left to cherish Mert’s memory are her children, Susan Wilander and her husband, Chet of Bemidji, Minn., Steve Yackle of Estherville, Nancy Yackle and spouse, Anne Marie Aita of Omaha, Neb., David Yackle and his wife, Brenda of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Janet Yackle of Minneapolis, Minn., Mark Yackle and his wife, Patti of Wallingford, Iowa, and Mary Feldman and her husband, Mike of Ruthven, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Matt Yackle, Andy and Tessa Yackle, Jenny Yackle and Jess Olsen, Katie Yackle, Sarah Yackle, Judy Yackle and friend, Dustin Moore, Christine and Ryan Nielsen, Paula Yackle, Heidi Yackle, Tommy Yackle and Brian Yackle; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Louise Carley of Cleveland, Ohio, Mike Kimmet and his wife, Kay of Fairmont, Minn., Tom Kimmet and his wife, Carol of Estherville, Connie Maday of Litchfield, Minn., and Alice Jacobson and her husband, Rod of Albert Lea, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Floyd; parents; sister, Judy Thibodeau; and baby brother, George. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or Respite Angels.
