Wrestlers advance to Day 2

LUVERNE – The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls will have seven wrestlers battling in Section 3AA semifinal matches today in the individual tournament after capturing at least one victory on Friday in Luverne.

Class AA, No. 8-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber won two matches on Friday to reach the 152-pound semifinals as he tries to defend his individual title and reach the state meet for the Red Bulls.

Weber pinned New Ulm’s Matt Hartley in 1:40 in the opening round, before earning a major decision over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook- Walnut Grove’s Sterling Schwartz in the quarterfinals.

Weber will need to beat Quad County’s Wyatt Hatch in the semifinals to earn the right to defend his title in the championship.

Kory Brown, the only other Red Bull state qualifier from last season, also came a step closer to heading back to the state meet by advancing to the 195-pound semis.

Brown pinned Redwood Valley’s Caleb Krause in just 35 seconds in the quarterfinals, to advance to today’s semifinal against New Ulm’s Lorenzo Hernandez.

FHS/MCW’s Collin Steuber advanced to compete in the 113-pound semifinals by pinning the Panthers’ Daulton Carlson in 1:03.

Steuber will face Fulda/Murray County Central’s Clayton Hartel in the semifinals for the right to wrestle for the championship.

Red Bull grappler Elijah Gronewold reached the 145-pound semifinal after defeating Redwood Valley’s Brady Globlirsch in a 14-8 decision.

Gronewold goes up against Morris Area/Hancock Area/Chokio-Alberta’s Myles Smith in the semifinal match today.

Red Bull 160-pounder Tanner Lange cruised by Redwood Valley’s Chase Rahe with a 6-1 decision to advance to wrestle Worthington’s No. 9-ranked 160-pounder Zac Kempema in the semifinals.

With the help of a pair of byes, FHS/MCW’s Luis Figueroa advanced to the 220-pound semifinals.

Figueroa will square off against the Eagles’ Braxton Greenwaldt for the right to wrestle in the championship.

Adrian Moscoffian rounded out the Red Bulls in the semis, pinning the Panthers’ Lane Anderson in 1:10 to advance to face Redwood Valley’s Logan Zaske in the 285-pound semifinal.

The Red Bulls’ Christian Hugget, Chris Ettesvold, Mario Maldonado, Christopher Krenz, Levi Bulfer and Harley Luhmann all will compete in the wrestleback matches today.

The semifinals and wrestleback matches will kick off at 10 a.m. today in Luverne.

Section 4A Individual Meet

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther senior Jake Denn is one step closer to making it back to the Class A state meet.

Denn, the Class A, No. 6-ranked 195-pounder, along with three of his Jayhawk teammates reached the semifinals during the Section 4A individual meet on Friday in Le Sueur.

Denn earned a first-round bye to reach the 195-pound semifinals, where he will face Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial’s Andrew Radke.

Jeremiah Colon reached the 126-pound semifinal match, after pinning St. James’ Joe Dominguez at 3:52.

Colon will face Spectrum’s Luke Nolden in the semifinal match. Nolden pinned Norwood Young America’s Ben Barth in 37 seconds to advance to the semis.

Justin Gifferson also took a quick pin, beating Spectrum’s Sam Rogers in 23 seconds to advance to the 132-pound semifinal match.

Gifferson advances to face the Class A, No. 3-ranked 132-pounder Jason Meyer from Sibley East. Meyer pinned Le Sueur-Henderson’s Luke Wilson in 1:43 to reach the semifinal match.

Steve Tierney rounded out the Jayhawk qualifiers, advancing to the 170-pound semifinal match.

Tierney outlasted the Giants’ Trenten Rogich in a 6-4 decision to advance to face Trinity of River Ridge’s Sam Swanson.

Swanson reached the semifinal with a first-round bye.

The Jayhawks also will have three wrestlers competing in the wrestleback matches. Cole Pietsch, Zack Pettersen and Weston Ricard will all wrestle to try and get back into true-second matches.

The semifinal and wrestleback matches are set to start at 10 a.m. today in Le Sueuer.
