North Union posts regional win

SIBLEY, Iowa – Sarah Rolling neared double-double territory to help power the North Union Warriors to a 55-40 first-round Iowa Class 2A, Region 1 basketball victory over the Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals on Saturday night in Sibley, Iowa.

Rolling delivered a game-leading 20 points to complement a co-team-best nine rebounds to help the Warriors break open a 35-33 after three periods by outscoring the Generals, 20-7, in the fourth quarter.

North Union (14-6) advances to face Okoboji (14-7) in the regional quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in Okoboji, Iowa.

Okoboji received a first-round bye.

Sibley-Ocheyedan ended its season with a 15-7 record.

Aurora Oliver netted 14 points and three steals for the Warriors, while Peyton Oleson contributed eight points and eight rebounds to the winning performance.

Dena Looft garnered a co-team-high nine boards to complement six points and a game-best five steals for North Union.

The Warriors connected on 15 of 28 shots from 2-point range for 54 percent, hit 3 of 14 from behind the 3-point arc and sank 16 of 31 at the free throw line on the game.

Boys Basketball

Truman/Martin Luther 73, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 66 – Sam Geistfeld made 6 of 6 free throws during the final minute of regulation to seal the BluejayKnights’ seven-point comeback victory over the Bulldogs during Valley Conference Showcase action Saturday in Alden.

Geistfeld erupted for incredible game-leading totals of 34 points and 22 rebounds to go with six assists, three steals and three blocked shots. The TML senior forward made 11 of 11 free throws and sank 7 of 10 field goals from 2-point range.

Alex Weihe also produced a double-double performance of 20 points and 13 rebounds to complement four assists. Weihe connected on 9 of 10 field goals on the game.

Adam Neumann contributed 11 points – all during the second half – and five assists to TML’s winning ways.

The BluejayKnights blistered the nets on 16 of 17 free throws, 18 of 27 shots from 2-point range and 7 of 23 behind the bonus arc.

Kyle Fisel scored 23 points and pulled down six rebounds for JWP, while teammate Ricky Johnson supplied 18 points and six boards.

The Bulldogs made 20 of 35 shots from 2-point distance, 5 of 16 behind the 3-point line and 11 of 16 at the charity stripe.

Truman/Martin Luther (11-13) plays host to Madelia on Tuesday night in Northrop.

Madelia 64, Granada-Huntley-East Chain 60 – Derrick VanHee delivered a game-best 26 points to steer the Blackhawks to a four-point win over the Mustangs during Valley Conference Showcase action Saturday in Alden.

Jack Bergeman scored 15 points for Madelia, which hit 15 of 27 shots from 2-point range, 6 of 21 behind the bonus arc and 16 of 25 at the free throw line.

Ryan Shumski notched a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace GHEC’s effort, while teammate Trent Stensland collected 13 points and seven boards.

Logan Pytleski netted eight points, Jared Green and Josh Johanson each delivered six points and four assists, while Jake Wolter added six points.

The Mustangs made 13 of 29 shots from 2-point territory, 6 of 15 behind the 3-point line and singed the nets by sinking 16 of 18 free throws on the game.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (8-12) travels to Wells tonight to face United South Central.

Madelia (8-16) travels to Northrop on Tuesday night to face Truman/Martin Luther in a regular-season contest.

Mankato Loyola 51, Martin County West 46 – The Crusaders used a 31-25 second-half scoring edge to slip by the Mavericks, 51-46, Saturday during Valley Conference Showcase action in Alden.

Richard Eckmann delivered 18 points to top MCW’s effort, while teammate Jake Faber produced 16 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Mavericks made 18 of 50 field goals, including 11 of 22 from 2-point range, and 3 of 7 at the free throw line.

Martin County West (12-10) travels to Worthington on Tuesday night for a nonconference game.
