Huskies fend off Bucs for state berth

NEW RICHLAND – The No. 2-seeded Blue Earth Area Bucs downed the No. 6-seeded United South Central Rebels in the Section 2A wrestling team semifinals on Saturday in New Richland.

Despite reaching the final, the Class A, No. 6-ranked and No. 1-seeded Jackson County Central Huskies, who cruised by No. 6-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 49-21 in the semifinals, pinned down the Bucs 44-31 to capture the Section 2A team championship.

The Bucs finished the team portion of the season with a 24-5 record, and will compete in the Section 2A individual meet at 5 p.m. Friday in Blue Earth.

The Huskies (22-4) advance to compete in the Class A state team meet on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

“We just got stuck to the mat for too many pins,” Blue Earth Area head coach Randy Wirtjes said about the Huskies’ six pins in the championship. “We had talked about that and knew we couldn’t have those if we wanted to win.”

The Bucs were never able to get a lead in the championship meet, with the Huskies jumping out to 21-0 lead with the help of three pins.

Jacob Tvinnereim got the winning started for the Huskies, shutting out Adam Legred 6-0 in the 106-pound match.

Dalton Wagner, Ryker Vanderwoude and Class A, No. 3-ranked 126-pounder Jordan Biehn then combined for three straight JCC pins in the 113-, 120- and 126-pound matches, respectively.

Wagner pinned Cole Klinker in 3:15, Vanderwoude needed just 49 seconds to pin Zach Buseman and Biehn pinned Camden Bowers in 1:36.

The Bucs rebounded to capture three straight pins to get the match within three points, 21-18.

Alec Huber pinned Dakota Rossow in 3:42 at 132 pounds before Jordan Stelter pinned Triston Peterson in 1:27 at 138.

Mike Ankeny then provided the momentum-swinging pin for the Bucs, pressing Luke Pygman’s shoulders to the mat 19 seconds into the second period of the 145-pound match.

“Getting those three pins at that point in the match was a big momentum swing for us,” said Wirtjes. “We needed those at that point, and they did a great job of getting those. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough today against a good team.”

Unfortunately for the Bucs, that would be as close as they would get to beating the two-time defending Class A state champion Huskies.

No. 8-ranked 170-pounder David Franta and No. 4-ranked heavyweight Martin Granados provided the Bucs’ final two wins of the meet.

Franta battled for a 21-13 major decision win over Christopher Baker in the 170-pound match to cut the Bucs’ deficit to 33-22 with four matches left to wrestle.

Granados then capped off the meet with a pin of Nathaniel Horn 36 seconds into the second period of the 285-pound match.

No. 2-ranked 152-pounder Paden Moore got the Huskies back on their winning ways with a pin of Luke Schavey 29 seconds into the third period.

The Huskies’ No. 3-ranked 160-pounder Luke Norland then pinned the Bucs’ No. 10-ranked 160-pounder Gus Phillips in 3:36 at 160.

Keegan Moore, the No. 1-ranked 170-pounder, earned a 22-7 technical fall victory over Kolt Gorg in the 182-pound match.

Jack Ziemer and Justin Tirevold recorded the final two JCC victories in the meet. Ziemer outlasted Jacob Johnson with an 8-3 decision at 195 pounds before Tirevold pinned Jared Armon in the 220-pound match.

The Bucs captured six pins in their semifinal victory over the USC Rebels.

After the Rebels took a 3-0 lead behind Dom Alger’s 5-0 win over Legred in the 106-pound match, the Bucs took the lead and never looked back.

Buseman then gave the Bucs a 5-3 lead with a 16-0 technical fall over Jesse Meyer in the 113-pound match.

Matt Goodrich captured a 9-0 win over Mitch Harpestad before Bowers collected the Bucs’ first pin at 3:48 in the 126-pound match over Kennan Biddle.

Huber and Ankeny then combined for back-to-back wins for the Bucs in the 132- and 138-pound matches.

Huber scored seven points in the opening period of the 132-pound match and held off Adam Knutson for the 9-2 win, while Ankeny blanked Mitch Harpestad 11-0 at 138 pounds.

Schavey, Phillips, Franta and Gorg rattled off four straight pins for the Bucs in a combined 3:14.

Schavey pinned Aaron Nasinec in 1:06, while Phillips pinned No. 5-ranked 152-pounder Derek Herman at 1:01 in the 160-pound match.

Franta then needed just 17 seconds to pin Seth Olson in the 170-pound match, before Gorg posted a pin over Cory Ehlert in 1:40 in the 182-pound match.

No. 4-ranked 145-pounder Dylan Herman and No. 2-ranked 182-pounder Colten Carlson broke up the Bucs’ winning ways with a pair of pins.

Dylan Herman pinned Stelter with two seconds left in the opening period of the 145-pound match, before Carlson pinned Johnson with 23 seconds left in the first period of the 195-pound match.

Armon and Granados completed the meet with a pair of Buc victories, with Armon pinning Joe Matthews with 1:24 left in the 220-pound match before Granados won the 285-pound match by forfeit.
