Marshall outduels Cardinals

MARSHALL – The Marshall Tigers boys hockey team captured the season sweep of the Fairmont Area Cardinals with a 7-3 victory on Saturday at Lockwood Motors Ice Arena in Marshall.

The Cardinals needed just 39 seconds to get on the scoreboard and take an early 1-0 lead.

Reilly Hoefker got an assist from Rodney Engstrom less than a minute into play to put the visitors on top.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that was their lone lead of the game, as the Tigers roared back and scored two in the opening frame.

Blaine Moran and Derek Rasmussen combined for the Tigers first score at the 4:11 mark in the period, before Brent Haukom scored with the man advantage.

Haukom caught an Alex Buysse and Dylan Criquet-Danielson assist and fired it into the net just seven seconds into the power play to go ahead 2-1 with 3:20 left in the period.

Criquet-Danielson then added his own goal late in the second, before Haukom scored his second to go ahead 4-1.

Criquet-Danielson, with the help of Andrew Bell fired a shot into the net with a little under two minutes left in the second.

Haukom, then scored four minutes into the Tigers’ fourth power play, with helpers coming from Bell and Jeremiah Barker.

Greg Claeys cut into the Tiger lead 10:45 into the third on the Cardinals second power play of the game.

With 50 seconds left on the power play, Claeys got assists from Sam Havnen and Brock Johnson to make it a two-goal game at 4-2.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Tigers came back to score two goals in 13 seconds to extend their lead.

Criquet-Danielson netted his second with an assist from Buysse, before Derek Rasmussen fired a shot through the crease with helpers from Moran and Taylor Rasmussen.

Havnen then cut the lead to three with 1:23 left in the game, scoring an unassisted goal for the Cardinals.

Bell, netted the final Tiger score with 25 seconds on the clock, thanks to a Haukom assist.

The Tigers fired 48 shots on net, while their goalie Mason Campion made 12 saves.

Colton Cunning, the Cardinal netminder, blocked 41 shots, while the Cardinals sent 15 shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (4-15, 0-4 SCC) travels to play Mankato East in a 5:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday at Four Seasons Arena in Mankato.

Marshall (12-9) plays host to St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday at Lockwood Motors Ice Arena in Marshall.
