Loyola slips by MCW
SHERBURN – The Class 1A, No. 8-ranked Mankato Loyola Crusaders held off the Martin County West Mavericks’ second half surge to take the 49-48 Valley Conference Showcase victory on Saturday in Sherburn.
After the Mavericks trailed the Crusaders by as many as seven in the opening half, the hosts came back to lead by as many as 11 points in the second half.
Unfortunately for the Mavericks, freshman Lindsey Theunick and senior Aunikah Bastian scored 16 and 15 points to top the Crusaders’ comeback efforts in the win.
Reilley Geistfeld scored a game-high 17 points to go along with 17 rebounds in her double-double performance for the Mavericks.
Kate Thiesse also neared double-double territory, netting 15 points, eight rebounds and doling out three assists.
McKenna Taylor pulled down seven rebounds, while Taryn Tumbleson pocketed three steals for the Mavericks.
Mankato Loyola made 12 of 18 free throws, while the Mavericks swished 20 of 28 from the charity stripe.
Martin County West (17-2, 11-1 Valley) plays host to Worthington in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday in Sherburn.
Mankato Loyola (18-2, 12-0 Valley) plays host to St. Peter in a nonconference game on Tuesday in Mankato.
Granada-Huntley-East Chain 69, St. Clair 66 – The Mustangs’ balanced offensive attack fended off the Cyclones in a 69-66 Valley Conference Showcase victory on Saturday in Sherburn.
Rachel Shumski scored a game-high 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds and five assists to top the Mustangs’ efforts.
Emily Zaharia netted 15 points and doled out four assists, while Brooke McDonald reached double figures with 12 points.
Allyson Cegelske distributed seven assists for the Mustangs, who made 27 of 58 from the floor and 10 of 24 free throws.
Chloe Hanson scored a team-leading 20 points, while Hailey Embacher and Katelyn Weber scored 16 and 11, respectively for the Cyclones.
Granada-Huntley-East Chain (8-10, 7-6 Valley) travels to St. James for a 6 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday.
St. Clair (8-12, 6-7 Valley) travels to play Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a 7:30 p.m. game today in Sleepy Eye.
Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 96, Martin Luther 58 – Kennedy Strauss scored a game-high 31 points, while Hannah Olson poured in 27 to pace the Bulldogs to a 96-58 Valley Conference Showcase victory on Saturday in Sherburn.
Hanna Geistfeld recorded a double-double performance of 18 points and 14 boards to top the Knights’ efforts.
Kayley Shoen tallied 14 points, pocketed three steals and doled out two assists, while teammate Alexis Brummond scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Knights.
The Knights made 19 of 61 shots from inside the arc, going 1 of 15 from 3-point land and made 17 of 29 free throws.
Martin Luther (7-11, 6-7 Valley) travels to play Mountain Lake Area in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday in Mountain Lake.
